Broken families are an ideal scenario for mental illness to go unchecked. But a cohesive family is the most powerful and effective first-line institution of intervention and healthy, sustained recovery. Acute mental health crises quickly overwhelm a family. But the signs of psychosis are far more dangerous than intervention.
For years, I have been involved with the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI). Their Oklahoma association has several local affiliates around the state. The affiliates provide free assistance, education, community support, and govt. advocacy. If you have a family member dealing with any mental health challenge, give a call to the NAMI affilate near you. The Oklahoma NAMI website is here.
