Patrick Henry wasn't a psychiatrist. He didn't understand the neuroscience of his life partner's tragic illness. But he knew her in ways his doctors, preachers, and statesmen did not. This "gut instinct" of his was centuries ahead of his day. But sadly our 21st century public policy is driven backward in the past 15 years. While our medicines hold great promise, our culture has decayed in some fundamental ways. We have let our politicians harm the most hurting families in our state. Our state legislature put a paddle lock on the mighty institutions which cared for our mentally ill. Now we send them to jails and prisons. And we spend way more money to punish them, than we did to recover them.
