Underrated Achol Akot Gave Jacie Hoyt the Best Birthday Ever Now Shes Powering the Cowgirls into the Postseason

2/28/2026

STILLWATER — Last April, Oklahoma State coach Jacie Hoyt spent her birthday eating with Achol Akot, hoping to sell the 6-foot-1 UCF transfer on her vision.

“Best birthday ever because she committed that night,” Hoyt said. “So that’s a very memorable birthday for me.”

Considering Akot was sitting right next to her, it would be easy to describe Hoyt’s praise as a polite exaggeration, but in this case, the Oklahoma State coach has the receipts to back it up.

Best. Birthday. Ever. pic.twitter.com/7MapSc2LIH

— Jacie Hoyt (@CoachJacie) April 3, 2025

“When I first played them (while still at UCF), I just felt the unity in how they played,” Akot said, recalling why she committed. “Also, they played fast and aggressive. That’s one of my things that she loves to say. And I think I’m just that type of player, and I fit in just very well.”

All of that was on display and more in Oklahoma State’s 70-56 dismantling of Kansas on Saturday night. Suddenly unstoppable in the paint, Akot scored 12 points all on her own in the third quarter alone to finish with 18 and nine rebounds. She also added a pair of assists and two steals.

“She filleted us,” Kansas coach Brandon Schneider said.

Hoyt took a little longer summing up the junior’s impact, delivering three minutes of uninterrupted praise for the first-year Cowgirl.

“I think that she’s arguably the most underrated player on our team,” Hoyt said. “I don’t think she gets enough, gets as much credit as she should. I think that a lot of people can be critical of our team because they say that we don’t have a true post.

“In my opinion, we played two of the best post players in the Big 12, and in the country this week, Audi Crooks, Jaliya Davis. They will earn national honors, and rightfully so. And she handled it beautifully. I mean, what she did at Iowa State was, it was special. What she did today, it was special. There was no answer for her.”

Davis finished Sunday’s game with 24 points, roughly three above her season average, and four rebounds, more than two below her average. However, seven of those points came in the final 11 minutes after Akot powered the Cowgirls to a 20-point lead.

Akot essentially just picked up where she left off at Iowa State, where she scored a career-high 25 points on Wednesday. She also grabbed 10 rebounds that night to finish with her fifth double-double this season.

For context, Crooks finished that game, an 11-point Cowgirl victory, with 19 points and seven rebounds, which put her six points and half a rebound below her season-average.

“No one can outrun this girl,” Hoyt said, continuing to praise Akot. “And now that her half-court game is developing, it’s so cool to watch. She’s on the perfect team because she’s got shooters all around her. So you know, she can expose different defenses in that way. … I hope people see the value that she brings because she’s a really special player, and she’s obviously playing her best basketball right now.”

While Akot shone in the second half, sophomore Jadyn Wooten stole the show for most of the evening, matching Akot with 18 points, to go along with a team-high seven assists and four rebounds.

“I think that we have the Sixth Man of the Year coming off the bench in Jadyn Wooten,” Hoyt said. “I feel very strong about that. I think she’s proven that. I just say that because she could very easily start on this team, there’s no doubt about that, but she’s bought into her role.”

Saturday’s win gives Oklahoma State (23-8, 12-6 Big 12) the fourth seed in the Big 12 Tournament next week, which comes with two byes. The Cowgirls return to action on Friday at 11 a.m. against a team potentially seeded as high as fifth.

Hoyt made it clear in her opening remarks that Oklahoma State viewed both Saturday and next week as a chance to push for a higher seed in the NCAA Tournament. ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme ranked the Cowgirls as a No. 8 seed headed into the weekend, but the Cowgirls NET ranking of 27 could help their case for a much higher seed, especially if they can further pad their resume with wins next week against what should be top-tier competition.

“I don’t think that there’s any doubt in my mind how hungry we are,” Hoyt said. “And just super proud, I think that we are playing our best basketball right now, and what we did against KU, who is playing really, really well, I think they were arguably the hottest team in the conference coming in here.”

Five Thoughts on Oklahoma States 91-68 Loss to Cincinnati

2/28/2026

BOX SCORE
RECAP

Well, that was ugly.

Cincinnati blew out Oklahoma State 91-68 on Saturday in a game the Bearcats led by as much as 32 in. It moves the Pokes down to 17-12 on the year and 5-11 in Big 12 play. Here are five thoughts on the game.

1. More Bad 3-Point D

The Bearcats came into Saturday as the Big 12’s worst 3-point shooting team, hitting just 32.5% of its attempts. But OSU’s 3-point D made another team look like the Golden State Warriors.

Cincy was 14-for-34 (41.2%) from deep. It’s the third-most 3s the Bearcats have hit in a game this season.

Three-point defense has a little bit of variability to it based on if teams hit tough shots or miss open ones. But the Cowboys have now allowed 10 teams to hit double-digit triples while shooting 40% or better, leaving little argument that OSU’s 3-point defense is anything other than bad.

OSU came into Saturday with the second-worst 3-point defense trailing only Colorado. No Big 12 team has allowed more 3-point makes than the Cowboys, who have now given up 271 triples this season.

2. Not an Ideal Matchup to Be Without Parsa Fallah

Given how much Parsa Fallah has meant to this team’s success, it’s not too surprising the Pokes struggled in the first game of his absence after tearing his ACL earlier this week.

But it was particularly not ideal that the Cowboys’ first game without Fallah came against Cincinnati — a team that starts a 7-foot-2 Moustapha Thiam next to a 6-foot-11 Baba Miller.

Those two combined for 35 points and 23 rebounds against the Pokes on Saturday. Miller nearly messed around and got a triple double, finishing with 11 points, eight boards and eight assists. Thiam’s 24 points tied for the second-most he has scored in a game in his career, while his 15 boards were a career-high.

Cincy outrebounded OSU 43-32. The Bearcats had a 14-5 advantage in offensive boards and had 24 second-chance points to OSU’s seven.

So, yeah, not the ideal spot to be without your best big man.

3. Hopium: I Still Think Ben Ahmed Is Going to Be Really Good

Ben Ahmed has had his ups and downs in his freshman season, but he has consistently played hard.

Sometimes, you could argue he plays too hard — like when he had four fouls in five minutes against Kansas a few weeks back.

He has a bit of a bull in a China shop to him, but if he can reign that in a touch, he’ll be a force.

Ahmed played a career-high 19 minutes Saturday, finishing with five points and eight rebounds. It wasn’t always pretty — he had three turnovers — but he just has a knack for getting his hands on the ball, and once a rebound is in his target zone, he’s almost certainly going to grab it.

Ahmed and Andrija Vukovic have had ebbs and flows in terms of minutes behind Fallah this year, but now the Cowboys will need both of them to close out whatever the rest of this season looks like.

4. Roy Is Due

Anthony Roy has had three odd games in a row now.

He had a season-low four points on Saturday, going 1-for-6 from the field and 1-for-4 from 3.

He had 10 in the Cowboys’ win against West Virginia and contributed to winning with his defense in overtime, but it was a unique game for Roy in that he had just one 3-point attempt.

Then in the loss to Colorado last week, Roy had six points and was 0-for-7 from deep.

So in his past three games, Roy is 1-for-12 from 3. This season and Roy’s career have shown that won’t hold up. Not having Fallah to work inside-out with will be a challenge, but he’ll certainly shoot his way out of this slump soon.

5. Even the Most Optimistic Aren’t Holding Their Breath

Even after Tuesday’s win, it feels as over as it ever has following this blowout in Ohio.

Fallah getting hurt, getting clobbered on the road again — it just doesn’t feel like there is some magical Big 12 Tournament run coming that will get the Pokes back in NCAA Tournament contention.

This could be a fun NIT team with its scoring ability. Or Maybe the Cowboys can find their way into the College Basketball Crown tournament in Las Vegas. But this certainly feels like the fifth straight year the Cowboys will miss the NCAA Tournament.

Instant Recap: Oklahoma State Falls at Cincinnati 91-68

2/28/2026

BOXSCORE

A Cowboy team that was already struggling lost its most important player for the season earlier in the week. Things went about as smoothly as you might expect in their very next game.

Oklahoma State fell to Cincinnati 91-68. The Bearcats are ranked 15th of 16 Big 12 teams in scoring. They ran it up on the Pokes.

The Cowboys were without their best player Parsa Fallah who went down for the season with a torn ACL in OSU’s overtime win over West Virginia on Tuesday. There’s the qualifier, but Steve Lutz likely won’t accept that as an excuse.

The Cowboys started just 2-of-7 from the field while the Bearcats made six of their first eight shots, and it didn’t get better from there. OSU shot just 38% from the field in the first half while Cincinnati was an efficient 53%.

OSU was down by 14 midway through the first and trailed by 18 at the break. The Bearcats finished the half on a 6-1 run to take a 51-33 lead into the half.

The shorthanded Cowboys had a tough time without their anchor on defense, but it was on the perimeter not in the paint that they got burned. The Bearcats’ 51 first-half points were their second-most all season. They shot were 7-of-16 from deep in the first half. The Bearcats came in ranked dead last in the league 3-point shooting.

On top of missing his 14.7 points per game, the Pokes were lacking in the paint sans their best rebounder. The Bearcats took advantage, especially when it came to extending possessions and it paid off. Cincy outrebounded OSU 43-32 with a 14-5 edge in offensive boards and a 24-7 advantage in second-chance points.

The Cowboys also gave up 11 points on nine turnovers in the first half alone. They came in averaging 12.3 giveaways per game. That disparity extended to 16 Cincy points on 14 Cowboy TOs.

If Cowboy fans were hoping for things to swing in the other direction after halftime were disappointed.

The Bearcats put their foot on the pedal coming out of intermission. They started the second half on 10-2 run to push their lead to 26 less than four minutes into the second half. Cincy was up 30 by the 12 and a half mark and led by as much as on the way to a 23-point win. OSU finished the game on a 7-0 garbage-time run.

On the whole, Cincinnati outshot Oklahoma State 47% to 41%.  The Bearcats went 14-for-34 from beyond the arc (41%) while the Cowboys shot just 7-for-21 (31%). Again, Cincy is the Big 12’s worst shooting team from deep, but the Cowboys allowed them to 24 assists on 33 made baskets while Cincinnati committed just eight turnovers.

Four Cowboys scored in double digits, led by Vyctorius Miller’s 15 points on nine shots. Kanye Clary and Jaylen Curry each added 11 points. Filling in for Fallah his first career Big 12 start, Andrija Vukovic pitched in 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. He also grabbed four boards.

In their first outing without their second-leading scorer, OSU only got four points from their top scorer Anthony Roy.

With the loss, the Cowboys fall to 17-12 on the yead and 5-11 in Big 12 play. They extend their road stretch with a midweek matchup with UCF. The Cowboys face the Knights at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Orlando before finishing their regular season with a Senior Day matchup with Houston March 7.

Hoops Preview: TV Info Team Stats and Projected Lineups for the Cowgirls Senior Night Matchup against Kansas

2/27/2026

The Cowgirls close out their regular season with a visit from Kansas on Saturday with plenty to play for.

As of writing, OSU is in a three-way tie for fourth at 11-6 in conference play behind only TCU (14-3), and West Virginia and Baylor (both 13-4). So a Top 4 seed and double-bye in Kansas City is still very much in play.

But the Cowgirls are focused beyond the Big 12 Tournament. A Quad 1 win at Iowa State didn’t budge them off the 8 seed according to the latest Bracketology by ESPN. A win against the Jayhawks is important to not only retain that momentum heading into KC but to also bolster their case come Selection Sunday.

Both teams are actually coming off a big win.

Though the Jayhawks are in the bottom half of the league and aren’t quite as worried about March ramifications, they’ve been playing better over the last half of the season. KU has won five of its last six games and three-straight, including a huge win over No. 20 Texas Tech on Wednesday.

Here’s what you need to know before the Cowgirls and Jayhawks close down GIA for Senior Night.
