Penn State Transfer Gary Steen Commits to Oklahoma State

3/31/2025

But wait, there’s more.

Not long after Penn State transfer Alex Facundo announced his commitment to Oklahoma State, fellow Penn State transfer Gary Steen did the same.

A post shared by Gary Steen (@gary.steen_)

Steen went 3-3 for the Nittany Lions at 133 pounds this past season, his first at the weight after spending the previous two years at 125 pounds.

Out of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, Steen was a two-time PIAA state champ in high school. Intermat considered him the No. 55 prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. While redshirting during the 2021-22 season, Steen went 5-5 in open tournaments.

Steen broke into Penn State’s starting lineup for the bulk of the 2022-23 season, going 6-15. He went 6-3 as a redshirt sophomore in 2023-24. He competed in one dual that year, dropping the bout to Lehigh’s Shelton Seymour 6-3. Seymour was an All-American in 2025.

The second transfer commit of the day for the Cowboys, Steen is the third transfer overall the Cowboys have brought in in the early parts of this offseason. Casey Swiderski (Iowa State) joins Steen and Facundo as transfer pledges.

Reece Witcraft started for the Cowboys at 133 pounds this season, but it was his final year of eligibility. Other guys who should compete for that opening include Cael Hughes, Rin Sakamoto and JJ McComas. The Cowboys have reigning national runner-up Troy Spratley manning the 125-pound spot.

Oklahoma State National Champion Heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson Wins Hodge Trophy

3/31/2025

Wyatt Hendrickson has won wrestling’s Heisman Trophy.

Hendrickson was named the Dan Hodge Trophy winner on Monday. He’s the third Oklahoma State wrestler to win the award, joining Alex Dieringer (2016) and Steve Mocco (2005). Hendrickson won the award over fellow finalists Carter Starocci (Penn State) and Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State).

Hendrickson wasn’t in much of the Hodge talk throughout the year despite dominating all season. Why? Well, it was assumed Hendrickson’s magical year would come to an end against Olympic champion and two-time Hodge winner Gable Steveson in the national final. Instead, Hendrickson beat Steveson with a third-period takedown that sent shockwaves throughout the wrestling world. In many aspects, Hendrickson won the national title and the Hodge Trophy with that takedown.

YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE BABY

Hendrickson went 27-0 in his lone season at OSU after transferring from Air Force. In those 27 matches, 21 ended via either fall or technical fall. He was 17-0 against wrestlers who qualified for the 2025 national tournament and 8-0 against 2025 All-Americans. Hendrickson beat two NCAA champs on his way to his national title, besting 2024 national champion Greg Kerkvliet 8-2 in the national semifinal before his big win against Steveson.

This is also another feather in the cap of first-year coach David Taylor. In his first year at OSU, Taylor took the Cowboys to a third-place finish at the national tournament, delivering six All-Americans, two national champions and now a Hodge Trophy winner. Taylor is one of six to win the Hodge multiple times, as OSU’s coach took home the hardware in 2012 and 2014.

Daily Bullets (Mar. 31): Pokes Skid Out of Lawrence Cowboy Alum Wins a Pro Golf Tournament

Thanks for stopping by – here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news.
OSU Bullets
• Cowboy Baseball is hitting a bit of a low, swept by the Jayhawks in Lawrence over the weekend – plenty of talent to turn things around (PFB) • Former Cowboy Eugenio Chacarra won a European tour stop over the weekend (NBC Sports) • CBS Sports weighed in on the upcoming Big 12 football season, not the rosiest outlook for the Pokes.
The old adage says that when Mike Gundy’s teams have no expectations, they overperform, but things have never looked more bleak under Gundy in Stillwater. OSU got blanked in conference play and then lost nearly every impact player on both sides of the ball. Replacing both coordinators is tough enough, but right now it’s unclear what players on OSU’s roster can even emerge as above average Big 12 starters. Pick: Under 5.5 [CBS Sports]
• Evaluating the odds around the Final Four and evaluating the matchups (CBS Sports) • Fun quote from Cowboy commit Kaydin Jones talking about his dad’s experience around his son’s commitment to OSU:
“He’s just as big a fan as anybody,” (Kaydin) Jones said of his dad (Kejuan Jones) supporting a Cowboy. “It would have been cool playing for OU, but I get to create my own legacy at OSU and he’s just as supportive.” [OKState 247]

OSU Baseball: Cowboys Swept in Lawrence

BOX SCORE

The Cowboys rough start to Big 12 play continued Sunday in Lawrence.

Oklahoma State lost to Kansas 11-2, finishing off a series sweep for the Jayhawks. The Pokes scored the first run of the game and held a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, but things quickly went downhill from there.

The Jayhawks scored two in the fourth off a Michael Brooks home run that gave KU a 3-2 lead.

Kansas added five runs in the fifth inning. A walk and back-to-back singles ended Drew Blake’s outing on the mound. Brennan Phillips entered with the bases loaded and walked in a run. Noah Wech then came in from the bullpen. He closed out the inning, but it wasn’t pretty. An infield single scored a run before a flyout finally put an out on the board. Wech then walked in a run before the Cowboys attempted to turn an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, but they were unable to get the out at first and two more runs scored, making it 8-2 Jayhawks before OSU was finally able to get out of the inning.

Kansas’ unneeded insurance runs came in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Cowboys managed just one hit after Colin Brueggemann’s leadoff home run to start the fourth inning. They finished the day 5-for-31 at the plate.

OSU’s other run came in the first inning when Kollin Ritchie had a sacrifice fly that scored Nolan Schubart.

The Cowboys used five pitchers Sunday with all of them giving up at least one run.

OSU is 1-6 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys will get a break from conference action with a game against Missouri State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Springfield before returning home to host Kansas State in a three-game series next weekend.

OSU Softball: Cowgirls Run-Rule Penn State 10-2

3/29/2025

BOXSCORE

The Cowgirls took control early, and they finished off the Nittany Lions late.

No. 17 Oklahoma State defeated Penn State 10-2 in run-rule fashion.

OSU took advantage of early Nittany Lion mishaps. The Cowgirls went up 4-0 after a three-run third inning that was fueled by a pair of Penn State errors. Micaela Wark (2-for-2) also logged an RBI.

The Nittany Lions found themselves down four runs and in threat of run-rule entering the fifth, but they fought back. Penn State scored two in the fifth on a pair of solo home runs by Haylie Brunson and Meagan Ricks.

But the Cowgirls quickly answered with Claire Timm’s RBI triple to make it 5-2. That might have stymied the rally, but Karli Godwin started a sixth-inning scoring spree that buried the Lions.

Godwin scored two on a double to left field before a Megan Delgadillo single sent Amanda Hasler across the plate to make it 8-2.

Then Timm had another triple, this time sending Delgadillo and Godwin home to secure the 10-2 run-rule win.

RyLee Crandall got the start inside the circle and moved to 1-2 on the year. She lasted two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Kyra Aycock pitched two more and struck out one while allowing two hits. Katie Kutz was shouldered with both Penn State runs in her single inning before Ruby Meylan earned the save, pitching a perfect sixth inning while striking out two.

With the win, the Cowgirl improve to 21-9 on the season. OSU will play Arizona State in a nonconference game Wednesday in Tempe before the Cowgirls’ Big 12 series against Arizona next weekend in Tucson.
