• Mike Gundy opined on one of college football’s big issues – scholarship limits with a roster of 85 and 25 in each class.

Gundy offered a scenario in which a team was down in numbers. Maybe at 74 scholarship players, 11 fewer than the maximum, perhaps because of NCAA probation or multiple coaching changes. 

“That’s a big disadvantage,” Gundy said. “Then after spring ball, all the way up to July 1, you can roll out of there. You could go through June, roll out of there and go play for Kansas State, if you want to, and be eligible to compete. 

“Now I’m at 68 out of 85 scholarships, and it’s July, and I’ve got to play in September. That’s a problem. I don’t know how you fix it fast.”

After entering the final round tied atop the team leaderboard, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Texas didn’t disappoint Wednesday.

No. 3 Oklahoma State took home the Big 12 team championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Cowboys beat No. 1 OU by a stroke and No. 5 Texas by two strokes after a dramatic final few holes.

The Sooners were the first of the contending teams in the clubhouse at 10-over.

Things looked doomed for OSU on the 17th hole when Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra hit a triple-bogey. He had done well up until that point, as he was 4-under before that. But Bo Jin, Austin Eckroat and Aman Gupta went a combined 3-under on the final three holes. Meanwhile, Texas fumbled the 18th, when Pierceson Coody hit a triple.

Jin, a freshman from Beijing, China, finished tied for second on the individual leaderboard and won the team title with a par putt on 18. He finished the event with a 3-under 277.

Texas’ Cole Hammer won the individual title a stroke ahead of Jin.

Eckroat was the star of the final round. He finished Round 4 with a 5-under 65, the low round of the day. He was 4-under at the turn, and in his final five holes of the day, he went birdie, par, birdie, birdie, bogey.

It’s the Cowboys’ 11th Big 12 title since 1997, most of any team in the conference. It’s their 47th conference title, also winning in the Big Eight and Missouri Valley.

The win also makes the Pokes back-to-back conference champs after they won in 2019 and the event didn’t happen in 2020 because of the pandemic.

The Cowboys will next be in action May 17-19 in Stillwater at the NCAA Regional at Karsten Creek.

With Draft Night looming, a shorthanded Pistols Firing staff convened to discuss our predictions for Oklahoma State’s class of draft-eligible prospects.

Kyle Cox: It’s seems to be a consensus that Teven Jenkins will be the first Cowboy to hear his name called. But if you were to guess, who goes next?

I think it’s Rodarius Williams. Teams love a good cover man, and he was one of the best in all of college football last year. Plus, NFL brass love comparisons and the fraternal connection with Greedy won’t hurt him.

Marshall Scott: If you would’ve asked me this in November, I would’ve said Rodarius Williams because his stock was going crazy, but after all the underwear Olympic portions of the draft process, that seems to have cooled slightly. So, give me Tylan. He has been consistently great at OSU, and his draft stock seems to be progressing over recent weeks despite his injury concerns.

Cox: If you would have asked me two Novembers ago, I would have said Chuba and then Tylan, both in the first round.

I’m not sure I would have even considered Jenkins being a Day 1 guy. Shows how much I know.

Scott: Gundy has always been high on Jenkins. I’m not going to act like some O-line guru, but anytime a coach talks highly of a particular lineman, he is probably quite good. Non-injury Tylan should be a Top 15 guy, so I think whichever team gets him is going to be ecstatic so long as he stays healthy.

Cox: I don’t know how much either of them (Chuba and Tylan) hurt their stock coming back, but it doesn’t appear they raised it.

Scott: Yeah, sad story especially for Chuba. It kind of just drives home the “take the money” point of view.

Cox:

Okay, that brings me to my next question. Out of this bunch, who are you most excited to see play on Sundays?

I’ll take Chuba. I think if he lands in the right offense, he could put up killer numbers. He was dinged up all last year. How quickly we forget, but he’s a bonafide stud.

Scott: I love Chuba, but give me Tylan on this. I just think he can do so many things. He might play some slot in the NFL, and he is still going to outjump a bunch of people. And as a Green Bay Packers fan, I need him Lambeau Leaping.

Cox: Did your heart skip a beat when you saw Todd McShay’s mock with Tylan teaming up with Aaron Rodgers in Round 2?

Scott: Halfway, but then I remembered the Pack traded up to get a QB in Round 1 last year. So, they’ll probably take the best long snapper available in Round 2.

Cox: Okay, name one Cowboy that could be end up being a sleeper in the NFL over time. Maybe a late round or undrafted guy, a la Chris Carson.

Scott: I think the obvious answer is Dillon Stoner. Stoner is a stud. He was always the No. 2 or 3 guy in OSU’s receiver room, but it was because James Washington and Tylan Wallace were in there. He is versatile, reliable and a heck of an athlete. I think he’ll have some great feature written about him some day. 

Cox: You stole mine. I could also make a case for Amen Ogbongbemiga. It’s all about fit, especially with defenders, but Amen was as consistent and productive as anyone on Jim Knowles’ defense the last two seasons. That gives him a chance to stick in the league for a few years if he lands in the right scheme and stays healthy. 

Scott: Stoner was too obvious.

Transferring in conference is a thing.

Former Texas Tech forward Tyreek Smith announced his commitment to Oklahoma State on Wednesday via Twitter.

Smith played in all of Tech’s 29 games this past season as a redshirt freshman where he averaged 2.6 points and 2.4 rebounds a game in 8.6 minutes.

Tech listed Smith at 6-foot-7, 220 pounds this past season. Although his per game stats might not jump off the page, his per 40 numbers are solid at 12.3 points and 11.5 rebounds.

He does most of his scoring at the rim thanks to his bouncy athleticism. He shot 61% from the field this past season. Although he didn’t take a ton of 3-point shots, he did go 3-for-8 from deep at least keeping defenses honest.

Smith was a three-star recruit in the 2019 recruiting class, picking Texas Tech over offers from Oklahoma, Florida, Texas A&M, Kansas State, LSU, Ole Miss, Houston and others.

Here are about two minutes of Smith dunking in AAU games as a high schooler.

This likely leaves Mike Boynton with one scholarship to fill after losing Cade Cunningham, Ferron Flavors and Dee Mitchell while adding Smith and Syracuse power forward Woody Newton.

DePaul center Nick Ongenda had OSU in his final three schools but announced Tuesday that he would return to DePaul. OSU also offered New Mexico Center Bayron Matos, but he committed to USF on Tuesday.

Names to watch for OSU are Bryce Thompson (Kansas), Jaxson Robinson (Texas A&M), DeVante’ Jones (Coastal Carolina), Bryson Williams (UTEP) and Sahvir Wheeler (Georgia). Heritage Hall standout Trey Alexander was also recently released from his letter of intent with Auburn.

We’re just one day away from the start of this year’s NFL Draft, and it could be a big one for Oklahoma State.

In a year that’s been anything but normal, OSU could boast its largest draft class under Mike Gundy with at least five Cowboys currently projected to go somewhere in the draft.

Here’s a roundup of where the top prognosticators see a handful of Cowboys being selected, starting with who is, at this point, a consensus Day 1 pick.

Teven Jenkins | Projected: Mid-Late 1st Round

The former Cowboy tackle has been getting first round projections since his senior season, and his strong pro day did nothing but solidify his stock.

Las Vegas Raiders | No. 17: NFL.com’s Chad Reuter sees Jenkins headed to Vegas to be a Raider, as does Yahoo Sports writer Eric Edholm.

The Raiders plug in Jenkins at right tackle, where he can use his strength and nasty attitude to replace free-agent disappointment Trent Brown. [NFL.com]

Trading down and getting Jenkins would be a coup, but GM Mike Mayock won’t veer from his approach just because fans say he reaches with his first-rounders. [Yahoo Sports]

Miami Dolphins | No. 18: CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones and Chris Trapasso both have Jenkins going No. 18 overall to the Dolphins.

… I don’t have a RB going in the first 20 picks. Instead, the Dolphins get their Day 1 starter at right tackle in Jenkins. [CBS Sports]

Chicago Bears | No. 20: There have been several outlets pegging Jenkins to be headed to the Windy City, including ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.

Jenkins is the last of four offensive tackles on whom I have first-round grades. A three-year starter at right tackle for Oklahoma State, he’s outstanding in the run game. [ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.]

 Jenkins plays with a mean streak, and the Bears could use more nasty on their offensive line. [ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson]

They need to get help up front at right tackle and Jenkins could step in and be an immediate starter. He plays with a nasty streak. [CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco]

Walter Football also tabs Jenkins as a future Bear.

Indianapolis Colts | No. 21: NFL.com’s Charles Davis and CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson both see Jenkins as a Colt.

The Colts invested valuable assets to make Carson Wentz their new starter. They make this pick to help maximize his opportunities to succeed. [NFL.com]

Pittsburgh Steelers | No. 24: NFL.com’s Rhett Lewis sees Jenkins headed to Steel City to reunite with Mason Rudolph and James Washington. Lewis has Jenkins going No. 24 to the Steelers. [NFL.com]

Jacksonville Jaguars | No. 25: Kiper’s cohort at ESPN, Todd McShay, threw out Jenkins as a possibility for a couple of teams earlier in the round, but has him going no later than No. 25 to Jacksonville.

We’ve mentioned Jenkins a few times already, but the Jaguars seem like a perfect match. They are investing in Trevor Lawrence as their franchise QB, and you have to protect franchise QBs. Cam Robinson is back on the franchise tag, and Jawaan Taylor is occupying the opposite tackle position, but Jenkins could slide inside to guard as a rookie before eventually taking over an outside role. He can hold his ground against power rushers without issue. [ESPN’s Todd McShay]

Baltimore Ravens | No. 31: NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks sees Jenkins reuniting with Justice Hill — and replacing a Bedlam rival — as a Raven.

The recent trade of Orlando Browns makes offensive tackle a top priority for the Ravens. Jenkins is an athletic big body with the length to stymie pass rushers off the edge. [NFL.com]

Tylan Wallace | Projected: Rounds 2-4

Round 2 | No. 49 | Arizona Cardinals: [CBS Sports]

Round 2 | No. 62 | Green Bay Packers: Tylan Wallace hauling in deep balls from Aaron Rodgers? I might have to buy one of those gaudy cheese hats.

Sound the alarm, we got Aaron Rodgers a receiver! Wallace is only 5-foot-11, but he plays bigger than his size and is a smooth route runner. He was a top-20 receiver in college football in 2020 with 922 yards. [ESPN’s Todd McShay]

Three of the nation’s Top 5 teams are playing in the Big 12 Golf Championship this weekend, and it hasn’t disappointed.

No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Texas enter Wednesday’s final round tied atop the team standings at 16-over 856. There is also a tight race atop the individual leaderboard with OSU’s Bo Jin, UT’s Cole Hammer and Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg tied with 1-under 209s.

It’s a true three-horse team race at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. Texas Tech and TCU are tied for fourth, 14 shots off the leaders.

Jin is a 6-foot-4 freshman from Bejing, China. His best finish of the year (and his collegiate career) to this point came in October at the Maridoe Invitational, an event OSU won.

He carded a 3-under 67 during Monday’s round at the Big 12 Championship before hitting an even-par 70 on Tuesday.

German freshman Jonas Bumgartner had the best third round among Cowboys, finishing the round with a 2-under 68. He is tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard with Austin Eckroat at 7-over 217.

An impressive part about this OSU team is that Eckroat is the only upperclassmen golfing for the Cowboys this week, and he is a junior. The rest are freshmen and sophomores.

It seems as if Mike Boynton is in talks with an elite playmaker from the SEC.

Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler is down to 10 schools, according to Jeff Goodman. Wheeler’s potential landing spots are Oklahoma State, Texas, Kentucky, Kansas, Gonzaga, Michigan, LSU, Oregon State, Stanford and Wichita State.

Wheeler started 43 of the 57 games he played in while at Georgia. He averaged 11.3 points, 5.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds a game during his two seasons. As a sophomore this past season, Wheeler averaged 14 points, 7.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game.

He had a career high in points in a loss against Florida this past season, where he dropped 27 on the Gators. He also had eight games this year with double-digit assists. Against LSU, Wheeler had a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists.

He is a high-level playmaker, but at 5-foot-10, he doesn’t fit the normal mold of big guards that Boynton likes to pursue. Wheeler has also struggled from 3 throughout his career, shooting 26%.

Wheeler played his high school ball at Houston Christian in Texas. He was a four-star recruit in the 2019 class, being ranked 100th nationally. He initially signed a letter of intent to play with Texas A&M, but after a coaching change (the same change that brought Chris Harris to Oklahoma State), Wheeler ended up a Bulldog.

With two open scholarship spots, it seems most likely that OSU is trying to add a guard and a center to round out its 2021-22 roster. Names to watch for OSU in the portal are Bryce Thompson (Kansas), Jaxson Robinson (Texas A&M), Nick Ongenda (DePaul), Bayron Matos (New Mexico), DeVante’ Jones (Coastal Carolina) and Bryson Williams (UTEP). Heritage Hall standout Trey Alexander was also recently released from his letter of intent with Auburn.

Sophomore Shane Illingworth started out a bit slow, but made some high-quality throws, including a contested 25-yard back-shoulder fade to Jaden Bray for the game’s first touchdown. Illingworth later hit redshirt freshman Rashod Owens for a 61-yard bomb. The ball was almost overthrown, but Owens made a great grab with his stretched-out arms.
