OSU Baseball: Cowboys Extend Winning Streak to Seven Games With Pair of Wins at Michigan

4/30/2023

The Cowboys went up to Ann Abor and took down the Wolverines twice this weekend. (A third game was canceled because of weather.)

Oklahoma State’s 8-5 win on Sunday pushed the Cowboys’ win streak to seven games. OSU hasn’t lost since April 15.

It was slow and steady for the Cowboys early on Sunday … until the fifth inning. OSU score one run in the first, one in the second and one in the third before things really got rolling.

Zach Erhard started the Cowboys’ five-run fifth with a solo home run to left. It was his second home run of the year.

Later in the inning, Tyler Wulfert doubled up the middle to score Chase Adkison and Carson Benge. Wulfert would later score on a bases-loaded walk. That walk brought Erhard back up to the plate, where he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run.

? is howling!

Wulfert was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored on the day. During this winning streak, Wulfert is 17-for-29 (.586) at the plate with 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He’s on an absolute scorcher.

Ben Abram advanced to 6-2 on the season with his six-inning performance on the mound. He gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out nine. Isaac Stebens, out of Stillwater High, earned his fifth save on the year by coming in and recording the final out.

Up to 30-13 on the year, the Cowboys still have another week out of conference play upcoming. OSU travels to Oral Roberts on Tuesday before hosting East Tennessee State next weekend in a three-game series. The Cowboys get back into Big 12 play on May 12 when they start their series against Kansas State in Stillwater.

OSU Softball: Cowgirls Get Back on Track with Series Win Against Texas Tech

4/30/2023

The Cowgirls held an uncharacteristic five-game losing streak heading into Lubbock this weekend, and while they didn’t have the cleanest of series, they did get back in the win column.

Oklahoma State took two of three off Texas Tech this weekend in Lubbock. Game 1 was delayed until Saturday, where the teams split a doubleheader. OSU won 10-1 in six innings before Tech won 4-3 in eight innings. That led to Sunday’s rubber match where OSU dominated and won 8-0 in just five innings.

It wasn’t until the fourth inning when Sunday’s scoring started, but the Cowgirls plated four in the top of the inning. It started with a Chyenne Factor infield single that scored Kiley Naomi. Then redshirt freshman Micaela Wark doubled to score Morgyn Wynne. That allowed true freshman Claire Timm to hit a double to left-center that scored Factor and Wark, making it 4-0.

OSU put up another four-piece in the fifth. Naomi brought in Katelynn Carwile with a double to left before Factor singled to score Naomi. Wark finished the game’s scoring with a two-run home run to right center. It was her ninth home run of the year.

Wark was 4-for-9 in the series with three runs scored and six RBIs. She is hitting .343 in her true freshman season.

The eight-run lead left the Red Raiders in risk of getting run-ruled. And freshman pitcher Kyra Aycock made that risk a reality. She gave up a two-out single in the fifth, but that was it. She finished the day having thrown all five innings where she allowed no runs off five hits while walking none, hitting one and striking out three.

The Cowgirls play North Texas on Wednesday in Denton before heading back to Cowgirl Stadium for a highly anticipated Bedlam series next weekend.

A Look at the Big 12 Standings

TEAM BIG 12 RECORD OVERALL RECORD
Oklahoma 14-0 44-1
Texas 11-4 39-9-1
Oklahoma State 10-5 41-9
Baylor 5-10 36-15
Kansas 4-10 22-23
Texas Tech 5-13 31-21
Iowa State 4-11 21-28
*Results as of writing

With just three Big 12 games to go, it’s impossible for the Cowgirls to track down the Sooners for a piece of a regular season title, but OSU could find a way into second if some things break the Cowgirls’ way this upcoming weekend.

It would be a steep mountain to climb, as the Cowgirls play OU, a team that has lost just once this season. But Texas plays a good Baylor squad next weekend with two of the three games being played in Waco.

So, if you’re an OSU fan, you’re cheering for OSU (obviously) and Baylor.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Former Oklahoma State football players Tyler Lacy and Jason Taylor II were selected at the 2023 NFL Draft Saturday, as Lacy was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 130th overall pick in the fourth round and Taylor was picked by the Los Angeles Rams with the 234th pick in the seventh round.

Undrafted Free Agent Tracker: Which Teams Are Picking Up Pokes after the NFL Draft

4/29/2023

The 2023 NFL Draft has come and gone, but the movement of former Oklahoma State standouts isn’t done yet.

Tyler Lacy and Jason Taylor II were the only former Cowboys to get taken in the NFL Draft’s seven rounds. Lacy went in the Fourth Round to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Taylor went in the Seventh to the Los Angeles Rams.

But there are still a handful of other former OSU players who will get added to NFL teams this weekend. Here is a recap of who is going where. This will be updated as announcements start to trickle out.

Brock Martin — Las Vegas Raiders

A fan favorite during his six-year college career, Brock Martin got picked up by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Capital Sports Advisors.

Martin developed a tough guy reputation battling through injuries and doing what was needed for the Cowboys to win games. In 2022 he had 42 total tackles (tops among OSU defensive linemen), including 11.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. For his career, he had 146 total tackles, 39 tackles for loss and 15 sacks.

He was an All-Big 12 First Team selection during the Cowboys’ Fiesta Bowl-winning 2021 season. He made the conference’s Second Team this past season. He was a five-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

Martin was a three-star recruit in the 2017 class, picking up offers to Baylor, Kansas State, Kansas, Texas Tech and others before landing in Stillwater.

Los Angeles Rams Select Jason Taylor II in Seventh Round of 2023 NFL Draft

4/29/2023

The Los Angeles Rams selected former Oklahoma State safety Jason Taylor II with the 17th pick of the seventh round (No. 234 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The OKC native came to OSU as a three-star prospect out of Carl Albert High School as part of the 2018 class. After a redshirt season (in which he saw the field in three games), Taylor played every game as a redshirt frosh, quickly making a name for himself as a special teams phenom.

His legend grew in 2020 when he ran back a Kansas State fumble 85 yards to the house and then returned an onside kick for a touchdown against Texas Tech. By his junior season, he had shed his special teams status and started 13 games, earning All-Big 12 honorable mention.

In 2022, Taylor took another step forward, leading the Big 12 in solo tackles (80) and interceptions (six). He was a Walter Camp Second-Team All-American, a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist and an All-Big 12 first-teamer.

After winning the Super Bowl in the 2021-22 season, the Rams had a disappointing 2022-23, going 5-12. It’s been a busy draft weekend for Los Angeles, as Taylor was the 13th prospect the Rams took (and they still have another pick). Taylor is, however, just the second defensive back LA has taken, joining fellow Big 12er Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson out of TCU, who went in the sixth round.

Jacksonville Jaguars Select Tyler Lacy in Fourth Round of 2023 NFL Draft

4/29/2023

The Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday selected former Oklahoma State defensive lineman Tyler Lacy with the No. 130 pick in the the 2023 NFL Draft. The pick made him a fourth-round selection as the 27th pick of the round and the highest-drafted player from OSU in the 2023 class.

The moment ??

Congratulations @tylerlacy85! #GoPokes | #DAT pic.twitter.com/2PkhK778Ta

— OSU Cowboy Football (@CowboyFB) April 29, 2023

Lacy came to OSU as a three-star prospect out of Sachse High School (Texas) as part of the 2018 class. After sitting a redshirt season, he started in all 10 games he played as a freshman — missing three games due to injury — and proved himself an immediate impact player.

He was a leader for the Cowboys’ defense over the never three years, earning three consecutive All-Big 12 honorable mentions and ending his career with 11.5 sacks, 30 tackles for loss and four passes defended. He was also invited to the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Lacy’s selection gives OSU a defensive player drafted by the NFL in a third consecutive season after getting four — including three in 2022 — selected across 2021 and 2022. He’s the 14th defensive player to be drafted in the Mike Gundy era and the second-highest drafted defensive linemen of the Gundy era behind only Emmanuel Ogbah, who was taken with pick No. 32 in 2016.

Daily Bullets (Apr. 29): Cowboys Lead Big 12 in Basketball Transfers Roc Riggios Perfect Stereotype

4/29/2023

Thanks for stopping by – here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news.

Three Thoughts

• Another Cowboy, guard Chris Harris, Jr. entered the transfer portal yesterday – and Woody Newton found a home close to home – six transfers out ties for the lead in the Big 12 (PFB)

• This piece on infielder Roc Riggio is spot on – he’s the prototype “love him if yours, hate him if he’s not” kind of player (O’Colly)

• OSU is in the ballpark with their long-term Big 12 mates as far as first-round picks over the last decade – was not expecting to see that UCF, Houston, and Texas Tech had more first-round picks than the Longhorns over the last ten years (PFB)

Two Quotes

• Mike Gundy on parenting and coaching your son is thoughtful:

“The difficulty of parenting is letting your kids fail,” Mike said. “And letting them grow from failure, which makes them better in the long run, but that’s not easy to do. I would say it’s the same thing here so far with Gunnar is, I stay out of it. I let him fail and then fix it and coach (Tim) Rattay helps him.”

[O’Colly]

• Golf thoughts from Cowgirl head coach Greg Robertson:

“You gotta be in control of your thoughts and what’s going on in your head,” Robertson said. “And golf is such a mental sport, and there’s so much time to think in between your shots and what you’re doing, that that’s a huge part of it. And if you don’t handle that the right way, you’re not gonna be the best golfer that you can be.”

[O’Colly]
One Question

• I love this concept – lots of room to dream about from an Oklahoma State perspective. For $1M could you get a shot off around the goal guarded by Moussa Cisse? Could you block Justin Kirkland for five seconds?

Most Viewed of the Week

• No. 1 OSU landed East Carolina transfer Javon Small

• No. 2 Takeaways from OSU’s spring practice

• No. 3 OSU showing interest in potential hoops transfers

• No. 4 Daily Bullets – talking OSU’s easiest schedule ever

• No. 5 OSU secured a commitment from 2024 safety

Non-OSU Bullets

• Research on what makes people happy
• Learning to rest from the Psalms (faith-based)

This Giannis response was amazing.

OSU Hoops: Chris Harris Jr. Enters the Transfer Portal

4/28/2023

A promising, yet injury-plagued career in Stillwater appears to have come to an end.

Chris Harris Jr. joined the transfer on Friday according to multiple sources. He is the sixth Cowboy to do so this offseason.

Harris came to Oklahoma State as a four-star prospect and part of the Cowboys’ 2019 class but suffered a season-ending knee injury after 22 games in his freshman season. Harris rebounded and rehabbed to return for OSU’s season opener as a sophomore in 2020-21 but suffered another knee injury in the first half which benched him for the second-straight year. He missed all of 2021-22 as well but did return for this past season.

After playing a career-high 32 games in 2022-23, Harris suffered a third season-ending knee injury against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament. He averaged 2.4 points per game, 1.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists this past season. The senior guard has two years of eligibility remaining.

Harris joins Avery Anderson (TCU), Kalib Boone (UNLV), Tyrrek Smith (SMU), Woody Newton (George Mason), and Moussa Cisse (portal) as Cowboys to have left the roster via the transfer portal this offseason. The Cowboys currently have the 12th-ranked class in the 2023 cycle according to 247 Sports.

Former Oklahoma State Forward Woody Newton Commits to George Mason

4/28/2023

Another former Oklahoma State basketball player has found a new home.

Woody Newton committed to George Mason on Friday, according to multiple reports. Newton, listed at 6-foot-9, played in 29 games for the Cowboys this past season, making 13 starts. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.4 rebounds a game.

Newton came to OSU from Syracuse. This being his second transfer, Newton would need a waiver to be immediately eligible next season. He still has a redshirt year available should it come to that, but with him moving to Virginia, he might receive a waiver for being closer to his home of District Heights, Maryland — about an hour drive away.

He becomes the fourth former Cowboy to find a landing spot, joining Avery Anderson (TCU), Kalib Boone (UNLV) and Tyreek Smith (SMU). The only OSU player in the portal who hasn’t found a new school yet is Moussa Cisse.

OSU coach Mike Boynton still has three scholarships at his disposal to try to recoup what he has lost in the portal. The Cowboys did secure a commitment from East Carolina point guard Javon Small earlier this month. OSU also has the No. 10 recruiting class in the country. That class includes four high school prospects who are listed as a four-star recruit by at least one of the major services in Brandon Garrison, Eric Dailey Jr., Justin McBride and Jamyron Keller.
