We Need to Take Care of Our Own: Steve Lutz on Hosting Doug Gottlieb Green Bay for Season Opener10/31/2024
STILLWATER — The first Cowboy basketball game of the Steve Lutz era will be against an alum who hasn’t been shy in his pursuit of the job Lutz holds. It’s a risk, but it’s also an opportunity. Oklahoma State will host Green Bay at 8 p.m. Monday in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Both schools have new coaches in town with Lutz coaching the Cowboys and Doug Gottlieb, OSU’s all-time leader in assists, starting his college coaching career with the Phoenix. “Doug is relentless in a lot of ways, and he was very aggressive in pursuing the game,” Lutz said. “With that being said, I also believe that being the head coach and the CEO of this basketball program, in order for us to have a great program, we need to take care of our own. This is Doug’s first head coaching opportunity. His university needs funds. If we’re gonna buy a team, or if we’re gonna give a team money to a university, it might as well be one of our own. I think, obviously, that’s part of the Cowboy code: we take care of one another. “From the other side of the coin, it’s a little bit risky. Doug played here. He was a good player here. He’s voiced his opinion in wanting to be the head coach here. But the program is bigger than one game. That’s ultimately why I decided we’d go ahead and do this.” With all the turnover at both programs, it’s tough to say with any certainty what either will look like Monday night. Lutz has brought in 10 new scholarship players to the roster with the only returners being Bryce Thompson, Jamyron Keller and Connor Dow. Gottlieb has had similar levels of turnover by brining in eight freshman and five transfers. The Cowboys were picked 14th in the Big 12’s preseason poll; Green Bay was picked eighth in the 11-team Horizon League. KenPom has the Cowboys as the No. 89 team in the country entering the year, whereas the Phoenix are down at No. 309 (of 364). Under normal circumstances, a game between OSU and Green Bay in early November wouldn’t raise a lot of eyebrows. But given the unique scenario of an alum/national radio host coaching the Phoenix, this game should attract more eyeballs than if the Cowboys brought in some other program from the Horizon League. Apparently, Gottlieb promised 13,611 people would be in attendance. “To be very frank and honest with you, Doug promised us a sellout,” said Lutz lightheartedly. “So if it’s not a sellout, it’s on Doug’s shoulders. That was part of his ploy and part of his wanting to come here. He promised a sellout. So we’re gonna see if he can produce on Monday.” Although it could be considered a risk bringing in a guy who has said in the past he wants the job Lutz currently holds, Lutz also pointed to the opportunity that those extra eyeballs could provide. “The more we can gather interest in our basketball program and we can get people in the building, I truly believe they will like the product that’s on the floor, and they will want to come back to see them again,” Lutz said. “If we have to do it by bringing Doug in or whoever, then let’s do it. Then it’s our job to play the right way and to have those people feel attached to the program and to the team and want to come back. That’s our job. We’ve done our part on the front end. Now we’ve got to execute on Monday.”

How much fun has this college football season been (when not watching OSU)? Well, it’s sort of a down weekend in terms of the national schedule, but this weekend still features a Top 5 matchup. Happy Halloween/America’s Greatest Homecoming. Oklahoma State hosts Arizona State at 6 p.m. Saturday in a game that was moved from FS1 to FOX. Here is a look at the Big 12 this week plus a gander at other notable games throughout the country. Big 12 ScheduleTexas Tech (5-3) at No. 11 Iowa State (7-0) — 2:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN A few weeks ago, the Red Raiders were hovering around the Big 12 title picture, but they’ll head to Ames having lost their past two. The Cyclones control their destiny as it pertains to Arlington. The Wildcats are still in a position to make a Big 12 title push, having lost only once in Big 12 play. K-State should be able to handle a Houston team that is averaging just 15.6 points a game. UCF has lost five in a row and just made some changes on its defensive staff this week with the firing of DC Ted Roof. Arizona comes in having lost four in a row. Somebody has to win Saturday. TCU and Baylor almost assuredly aren’t going to play for a Big 12 title, but each enters this rivalry game on a two-game winning streak. Other Games to WatchSan Diego State (3-4) at No. 15 Boise State (6-1) — 7 p.m. Friday on FS1 The Game of the Week will get over well before the Cowboys kick off in the evening, as Ohio State travels to Happy Valley. The Buckeyes scraped past Nebraska last week and have looked good but beatable this season. The Nittany Lions are wondering if this can finally be their year. Outside of that there aren’t a ton of good-on-good matchups around the country this weekend, but Pitt’s trip to Dallas is big for the ACC title picture. Both teams are unbeaten in ACC play, and the Panthers might be one of the more disrespected teams in the country considering they’re 7-0 and ranked just 18th. If SMU can win this game though, the Mustangs remaining three opponents enter this weekend with a combined record of 12-12.

OSU Soccer: Cowgirls Erase 2-Goal Deficit in Final 13 Minutes to Advance in Big 12 Tournament10/30/2024
The Cowgirls started the Big 12 tournament off with some fireworks on Wednesday. The Oklahoma State soccer team beat Cincinnati 3-2 in the first round of the conference tournament, but it wasn’t all that straightforward. The Cowgirls went down 2-0 in the 67th minute before erasing the deficit with three goals in the final 13 minutes. Senior wingback Alex Morris put the Cowgirls ahead in 89th minute with a beauty of a shot from well outside the penalty box.
It was another Morris who got the Cowgirls’ scoring started — Reganne, Alex’s younger sister. It was the first goal of the younger Morris’ career. It came in the 78th minute as the ball was pinballing around the Cincy box before falling to Reganne’s left foot, and she slotted it home past the diving goalkeeper. Junior midfielder Xcaret Pineda then tied the game in the 87th minute on a goal that was initially considered a Bearcat own goal before Pineda was awarded her sixth goal of the season after review. That set up Alex Morris’ game-winner. Conceding multiple goals has been a rarity for this OSU defense this season. The Cowgirls entered the Big 12 Tournament at 13-3-3 and had given two goals in a just four games during the regular season. OSU had 15 regular season shutouts, for reference. This win could go a long way in putting the Cowgirls into the NCAA Tournament field for the first time since 2020. But in the meantime, the Cowgirls have more work to do in Kansas City. OSU will play BYU in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 tournament at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Cougars are the tournament’s 4 seed while the Cowgirls are the 5 seed. OSU and BYU met in Provo in late September in a game that finished tied at 2.

The Sun Devils will have their starting QB back and ready to go when they arrive at BPS. Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt will play, according to head coach Kenny Dillingham. The Sun Devils coach spoke with media members on Wednesday stating, “He’s going to be the guy. He looked really good today.” This is an update from Dillingham’s “70/30″ statement from Monday when he explaining his confidence level that the redshirt freshman would return after going down with injury two weeks ago. “But it’s one of those, like, we gotta see him practice and stuff like that,” Dillingham said on Monday. “But he’s cleared to play. He wants to play. He’s excited about playing. He’s been putting in a lot of work to play, so we’ll see how that transpires.” Leavitt when down after a hard hit in the second quarter of ASU’s 27-19 win over Utah. He went 11-for-18 for 154, a touchdown and an interception. On the year, Leavitt has completed 59% of his throws for eight TDs and four picks. He’s also rushed for four scores. “I got hit in the ribs, started to spasm, and couldn’t really breathe,” Leavitt said.” But I was just fired up, so I was just really sad. I wasn’t really too worried about the pain, I was just sad I couldn’t put on for the team. So once I got the strength to get up, I told our team y’all please better go put this in one in. So I went to the tent, did whatever I had to do, got back out there and just did what I can to get a win with the team.” Leavitt played four games as a true freshman at Michigan State last year before transferring to Arizona State and then won the QB competition this past offseason. In his absence, the Sun Devils turned to Jeff Sims, who went just 12 of 23 for 155 yards in a loss to Cincinnati before they headed into a fortunately timed off week. Arizona State is 5-1 with Leavitt as its starter. The Cowboys and Sun Devils kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Cowboys will have a new look when they take the field for America’s Greatest Homecoming. Oklahoma State on Wednesday revealed new throwback uniforms that will debut against Arizona State at 6 p.m. Saturday. The helmet will feature a logo from the university’s Oklahoma A&M days. The uniforms will be the Cowboys’ usual black unis but with orange striping on long sleeves and socks. It will be the first time this season OSU has donned black jerseys.
According to a press release, the logo and stripes are some of the earliest known in school history to help commemorate the team’s 125th season. The “OA” logo was used for the emblem of the O.A. Association, which was organized in 1909 by the athletes of Oklahoma A&M College. That organization later became known as the “O” Club, then O-Club, and still rewards the “O” letter to varsity athletes today, commonly seen on letterman’s jackets. The helmet will also included a “125” decal on the back to commemorate the team’s 125th season and a front bumper decal of “OAMC” block letters. A cursive “Tigers” will be on the back bumper. The widely spaced horizontal stripes are a nod to the university’s first team name of “Tigers,” which was the name of the school’s athletic teams before it was replaced with “Aggies” in the 1920s and ultimately “Cowboys.”
