'The Devil's Potion' gets taken off mercantile shelves because of alcohol contentIn the Chickasha Daily Express, published Dec. 30th, 1919; we read of a strong crackdown on bakers flavorings, by the county prosecutor's office. Local merchants' stock was confiscated and housewives were ordered to turn in their contraband vanilla, lemon, Almond, peppermint, and other various & exotic flavors. Oklahoma had passed liquor prohibition on the same day they became a state, back 12 years earlier. But since then, the entire nation followed our lead, passing a national constitutional amendment to make the USA a dry nation. It merely sent the commerce underground & empowered organized crime to control our commerce in the products. Itinerant Peddlers get jailed and cars seized, for selling lemon flavorings to the public. The Grady County prosecutor was especially harsh on traveling peddlers who were caught with any contraband baking flavors. They were immediately arrested and their automobiles were confiscated in their convictions. This added to the hobo populations, as peddlers had no idea what interpretation of the law was applied in any given county.
