Free Market Friday: Growing concern from business leaders

10/22/2020

Comments

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in McGirt v. Oklahoma that the Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s reservation was never disestablished, some supporters of the ruling waived off concerns it would create massive disruption in Oklahoma. But leaders in business and government are arguing, persuasively, that is not the case.

An unprecedented surge in unemployment claims caused by this year’s COVID-19 shutdown, combined with major fraud, has drained Oklahoma’s unemployment insurance trust fund and requires an increase in associated taxes on employers.

My question for law-enforcement opponents of SQ 805

10/20/2020

Comments

These law-enforcement officials would have us believe they don’t make law, but just enforce it as written. But they are some of the most vocal and active lobbying groups in the state. How many criminal justice reforms have we seen fought by the District Attorneys Association, Sheriffs Association, and Fraternal Order of Police?

The recent flawed state audit of Epic Charter Schools, a public online K-12 provider, has revealed an issue far more pressing for policymakers than questions about whether Epic coded expenses properly.

    Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs

For 25 years, OCPA has served as Oklahoma’s largest and most influential free-market based think tank. We conduct research and analysis of public issues in Oklahoma from a perspective of limited government, individual liberty, and a free-market economy.
Over the years, OCPA has steadily increased in breadth, scope and ultimately, effectiveness. As long as government exists, there needs to be an organization to keep it accountable. In Oklahoma, we are that organization. And our policy work provides the road map for our state’s success.
Policy matters because people matter. It matters that students attend high-quality schools. It matters that small business owners are free from red tape. It matters that government is responsible and limited. It matters that the most vulnerable have access to opportunity.
      And you matter to us.
