Had he lived, Wellstone would have championed what later became the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party but, while as committed to principle as Sanders or other progressive leaders of the current moment, would have also offered voters humor, open-mindedness and common sense. While wise conservatives would have appreciated his sincere efforts to engage them and find common ground, they would have quickly discovered he was a far more formidable foe than the progressive leaders who followed him.
