1820 - Future Mormon church leader Joseph Smith has his “First Vision” in wooded area of NY, according to Mormon scholars

1845 - Patent awarded for adhesive medicated plaster, precursor of band-aid

1942 - 1st “Eichmann Transport” to Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps

1997 - 39 bodies found in the Heaven’s Gate cult suicides

2020 - US charges Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and other officials with “narco-terrorism by flooding the US with drugs

1807 - British parliament abolishes slave trade throughout the British Empire; penalty of 120 pounds per slave introduced for ship captains
1898 - Writer O. Henry sentenced to 5 years in prison for embezzling $854 from a bank reportedly to pay for his sick wife’s medical bills; goes on to write many classics while in jail
1996 - The European Union’s Veterinarian Committee bans the export of British beef and byproducts as a result of “mad cow disease”

1775 - Patrick Henry proclaims “give me liberty or give me death” in a speech in favor of Virginian troops joining the US Revolutionary War

1882 - The Edmunds Act (Edmunds Anti-Polygamy Act) is adopted by US to suppress polygamy; 1300 men are later imprisoned under the act

1919 - 8th Congress of Russian Communist Party re-establishes a 5 member Politburo which becomes the center of political power in the Soviet Union; original members include Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin

1945 - Battle of Okinawa: US Navy ships bomb the Japanese island of Okinawa in preparation for the Allied invasion, it would become the largest battle of the Pacific War in WWII

1945 - The Swallow Sidecar Company agrees to change its name to Jaguar (pictured)
