A bit of June 28th history…

1762 - Russian Tsarina Catherine II seizes power, declaring herself sovereign ruler of Russia

1820 - The tomato is proven non-poisonous by Col Robert Gibbon by eating a tomato on courthouse steps in New Jersey

1870 - US Congress creates federal holidays (New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas), initially only applicable to federal employees

1894 - Labor Day established

1902 - US buys concession to build Panama Canal from France for $40 million

1914 - Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria, and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo by Serb nationalist Princip; cause of WWI

1919 - Treaty of Versailles, ending WWI and establishing League of Nations, is signed in France

1964 - Organization for Afro-American Unity formed in NY by Malcolm X

1969 - Police carry out an early morning raid on gay bar Stonewall Inn in NY; patrons riot against police for 3 days; beginning of modern LGBT rights movement (pictured) 

A Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sofia in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, setting off a chain of events that would culminate in a world war by August. Five years later, on June 28, 1919, Germany and the Allies signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending World War I and providing for the creation of the League of Nations. Continue reading.

1922 - Newberry Medal 1st presented for children’s literature

1950 - North Korean troops reach Seoul, UN asks members to aid South Korea; Harry Truman orders US Air Force and Navy into Korean conflict

1972 - Atari, inc founded in California (pictured)

2003 - US National Do Not Call Registry, formed to combat unwanted telemarketing calls, gets almost ¾ of a million members its first day

2008 - Bill Gates steps down as Chairman of Microsoft Corporation to work on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

2017 - Mark Zuckerberg announces Facebook has reached 2 billion monthly users

2018 - Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa 2 arrives at diamond-shaped asteroid Ryugu

2019 - US Supreme Court rules 2020 census cannot contain a question about citizenship 

British scientist James Smithson died on June 27, 1829. He left an endowment "to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men." Continue reading.
