1487 - The 1st German Beer Purity Law is passed in Munich, stating that beer should be brewed from only 3 ingredients - water, malt, and hops

1876 - Archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann find the gold Mask of Agamemnon at Mycenae, the Mona Lisa of prehistory (pictured)

1877 - US inventor Thomas Edison demonstrates his hand-cranked phonograph for the 1st time

1910 - 1st US patent for inventing the traffic light system is issued

1935 - Physicist Erwin Schrodinger publishes his famous thought experiment  “Schrodinger’s Cat”, a paradox that illustrates the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics (pictured)

1963 - LBJ set up Warren Commission to investigate the assassination of JFK

1972 - Co-founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell releases Pong, the 1st commercially successful video game

2019 - Wood fragment believed to be from Jesus’ manger returned to Bethlehem after 1400 years by Pope Francis

1717 - Blackbeard attacks and captures a French merchant slave ship, which he renames as his flagship the “Queen Anne’s Revenge” (pictured)

1720 - Anne Bonny and Mary Read are tried, found guilty of pirating, and sentenced to death in Jamaica; although their discovered pregnancies win them stays of execution

1814 - The Times of London 1st printed by automatic, steam powered presses - makes newspapers available to a mass audience

1893 - Women vote in a national election for 1st time in the world in New Zealand

1895 - America’s 1st auto race organized by the “Chicago Times-Herald”; 6 cars, 55 miles, Frank Duryea wins averaging 7 mph

1994 - Convicted serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer is clubbed to death by fellow inmate in Wisconsin

2016 - “Hamilton” set new record for most money earned in a week on Broadway - $3.3 million

1095 - Pope Urban II preaches the 1st Crusade

1295 - English King Edward I calls what later became known as “The Model Parliament” extending the authorities of its representatives

1493 - Christopher Columbus returns to La Navidad colony, finding it destroyed by the 1st Native American uprising against Spanish rule. Taino cacique Caonabo led his people to attack the settlement after the brutal treatment they received from the garrison who disobeyed Columbus’ orders

1895 - Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel’s will establishes the Nobel Prize

1920 - “The Mark of Zorro” is released - 1st American superhero film (pictured)

1924 - In NYC, the 1st Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade is held
