Maybe there’s another more apparent internal candidate but it feels like a free spin on a potential coordinator replacement. Reportedly Clements will be very involved with the process. Feels like the “Kasey Dunn is calling plays while the OC is stuck in the elevator” moment. • A Chicago outlet did a piece on Cowboy assistant coach (and former White Sox manager) Robin Ventura • Jaylen Warren is “100%” entering the Fiesta Bowl – it will always be a great mystery to me how he was healthy enough to play Tech and Bedlam but not the Big 12 title game Side note – the non-playoff bowl games have to figure out NIL opportunities to get the stars into these games: • This is interesting – right after Cowboy Basketball announced on Monday that they’re shutting down basketball for a time, Mike Gundy made a comment about some of his players’ availability:
• Breaking down the Big 12’s new COVID-19 Basketball Policies • A starting cornerback for Notre Dame is questionable for the game • It’s fun to hear/look back on the closing of Malcolm Rodriguez’s recruitment: • Pretty cool – Collin Oliver named a finalist for the Freshman of the Year in college football: • This is something (as a fan who has never been a D-1 athlete) hard for me to understand: when a player transfers out, doesn’t it feel like they’re abandoning their team a bit? By no means am I saying it’s inappropriate and that they don’t have every right to. When an adult leaves a job for more money/better opportunities, it’s understandable but as a left-behind coworker, it feels a little raw. I would assume after years of running stadiums, competing, living, and traveling together, it’s a little different than the 9am-5pm relationship. Kolby Harvell-Peel voiced support for his teammates in the transfer portal:
It seems like there’s probably more there that an athlete can’t communicate. Non-OSU Bullets• Most mispronounced words of the year I always wonder how to follow up with someone effectively via email – HBR had a solid take here:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The ninth-ranked Oklahoma State football team continued its stay in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area ahead of Saturday's PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. PHOENIX, Arizona — The Cowboys featured ball carrier is back. Jaylen Warren said Wednesday morning that he is back to full strength entering Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Warren didn’t record a carry in Oklahoma State’s Big 12 Championship loss against Baylor on Dec. 4 because of an ankle injury. “I’m 100% right now,” Warren said. “I feel good.” Warren transferred to OSU from Utah State this offseason and has 237 carries and 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns. His breakout performance came in Boise, where he rushed 32 times for a career-high 218 yards and two scores. That started a four-game streak of triple-digit yardage performances, a spree that included a 193-yard performance in Austin. A senior without eligibility remaining, it wouldn’t have been too crazy in today’s climate if Warren chose to sit out the bowl game. Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams, who has 33 fewer carries and 132 fewer yards than Warren this season, opted out of the contest. But Warren will play. “I think missing the last game kind of sealed my decision,” Warren said. “I mean, I would play with these boys if we have five more games. I just like playing with them. The brotherhood we’ve created kind of sticks out for me, and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep playing with them. Like this last week of practice, it’s kind of been saddening knowing it’s my last week of practice with them.” Without Warren in the Big 12 Championship game, Cowboy running backs mustered only 33 rushing yards on 26 attempts (1.3 yards a carry). It was different circumstances with a healthy Danny Godlevske at center, but when Warren played against Baylor in early October, he rushed for 125 yards on 36 carries. “He was our go-to guy all year long, and to have him back and available for this game, at least so we think, that’s gonna make a difference,” OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. “I mean, the kid’s a great player, and he’s a sparkplug for our offense. The kids love him and they rally around him. So yeah, it’s a difference-maker for us.” The post Jaylen Warren ‘100%’ Entering Fiesta Bowl appeared first on Pistols Firing. Sometimes, the difference between winning and losing comes down to a few inches. And that's never been more true than the Big 12 Championship Game. STILLWATER – Oklahoma State defensive end Collin Oliver is one of three national finalists for the 2021 FWAA Freshman of the Year Award, it was announced Wednesday by the Football Writers Association of America. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The PlayStation Fiesta Bowl hosted its second set of virtual media availabilities with the Cowboy defense opening the press conference on Tuesday morning. Oklahoma State defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements took the role of defensive coordinator for the press conference before select members of the defense followed. PHOENIX, Arizona — Collin Oliver has been unleashed on opposing offenses all season, and Tuesday that blossoming star was unleashed on the media. Mike Gundy has a rule where first-year players aren’t allowed to speak with the media, but Oklahoma State’s coach waived that Tuesday morning for his true freshman pass rusher ahead of the Cowboys’ Fiesta Bowl tilt against Notre Dame on Saturday. Oliver’s 11.5 sacks is a team-best on a team that leads the nation in sacks. He is just the second player under Gundy to record double-digit sacks in a season, joining Emmanuel Ogbah. And Oliver is doing it as a true freshman. “It’s been crazy, you know, especially just now getting here and having all this success that our team has had,” Oliver said. “Being a part of this team has been, really, the more crazy part than what I’ve done, honestly. I’ve enjoyed every second of it, and it’s probably one of the funnest teams I’ve been on.” Oliver said he came into the college game confident in his ability, but that even he didn’t expect to have this much success this early on. He earned his first start in the Cowboys’ regular season meeting with Baylor, and since then he has had 11 sacks in nine games. He has finished the year with two sacks apiece against Oklahoma and Baylor in the Big 12 Championship. His second sack against the Sooners will live in OSU lore for the long haul. Oliver army crawled and sacked Caleb Williams on fourth down to ice the game. “Obviously, Bedlam is a heck of a game of be in,” Oliver said. “At the the end of the game, I was really tired again. But just having that end of the game sack, it was real crazy how the crowd cheered and all that stuff. I was zoned out. I was too tired, but was a cool moment.” Oliver has since been named a freshman All-American by myriad outlets. Defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements said Oliver’s athleticism stands out as to why he as good as he is, mentioning his first step and coordination. But Clements also mentioned Oliver’s football IQ, something Clements has seen in Oliver for a long while. “I saw a maturity level in Collin when we had him at a youth camp before his junior year [of high school],” Clements said. “By the end of the camp, I had gone off script, and I was trying to teach him things that we were teaching our own players and he was picking it up at that moment. So I knew he was going to be a good football player in time. Did I anticipate that it’d happen this season? No, no, I didn’t. But I’m glad it did.” The post Collin Oliver Discusses His ‘Crazy’ Freshman Season appeared first on Pistols Firing. Read this original article at Pistols Firing Blog. |
