Oklahoma Legislature passes bills disallowing trans children sports

The Senate gave approval to a pair of measures Thursday setting legal biological gender at birth and emphasizing that designation for female student athletes across the state.

Senate Bill 1100 would require the biological gender designation on Oklahoma birth certificates to be listed as either male or female, outlawing the use of any other designation — specifically nonbinary.

“This measure is a direct response to our state’s health department adding nonbinary as an option on birth certificates,” Bergstrom said. “Biological sex is very clear, and our vital state records must reflect this.”

The Senate also passed SB 2, also known as the Save Women’s Sports Act, which would prohibit anyone of nonbinary gender or any gender other than genetically female from playing on athletic teams designated for females, women, or girls.

SB 2 passed on a 37-7 vote and now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature.

Okay High School teacher Travis Sloat has resigned from the school after allegations came to light this week that he secretly filmed an underage girl who was visiting and about to take a shower in his bathroom.

Sloat is alleged to have told the girl, “Okay, I have to use the bathroom first.”

When the girl entered the bathroom and went to urinate before the shower, after she disrobed her bottom half, she allegedly noticed Sloat’s phone propped up in a position to capture any action occurring in the bathroom, according to witnesses. The girl picked up the phone and allegedly witnessed a video recording. She then rewound the video, according to the witnesses, and saw herself and before that, Sloat setting the phone up to record.

The girl reported the incident to friends, family and Okay Schools, which issued the following statement:

Our school does everything it can to protect our students. We were troubled by allegations of an incident that happened outside of the school setting in regards to an employee and a student. We immediately turned this concern over to law enforcement. The employee has since resigned.

A public information officer at Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office had not heard of the allegations, but is researching them and will call back with any findings. Fort Gibson Police Chief Rob Frazier has not yet returned a call for comment. Okay Superintendent Pete Hiseley said those were the two law enforcement agencies the incident was reported to.

Sloat, reached last night, said “No comment,” and hung up the phone.

We will update as more information becomes available.

UPDATE 9:14 a.m.: According to the spokesman for the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office, that agency did receive a report on the incident and referred it to Fort Gibson Police, which has jurisdiction. DHS was also notified and now is involved in the case, he said.

UPDATE 2:13 p.m.: Fort Gibson police said because one or more of the parties involved is Native, the case has been turned over to the FBI. The FBI has not yet returned a call for information.
