Former Oklahoma governor criticizes anti-protest bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Former Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry said Friday he is throwing his support behind an effort to reject a recently signed bill that seeks to crack down on protesters.

The former two-term Democrat described the bill as ill-conceived and dangerous and said he supports a citizen-led signature gathering effort to veto it.

Mask mandates ending in Oklahoma’s two largest cities

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Mask mandates intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus are ending in Oklahoma’s two largest cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

The requirement ended Friday in Oklahoma City and comes to an end Saturday in Tulsa, although the mandate continues at places such as city offices in both cities.

Mayors David Holt in Oklahoma City and G.T. Bynum in Tulsa both credited virus vaccinations for lowering the number of virus cases and hospitalizations.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on Thursday overturned the death sentences of two more convicted killers, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that Oklahoma lacks jurisdiction for crimes on tribal reservations in which the defendants or victims are tribal citizens.

Oklahoma House OKs ban on teaching critical race theory

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma public school teachers would be prohibited from teaching certain concepts of race and racism under a bill given final approval by the state House on Thursday.

The GOP-controlled House voted 70-19 for the bill that prohibits teaching of so-called “critical race theory.”

Oklahoma governor signs bill to ban abortion if SCOTUS rules

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill to immediately outlaw abortion in Oklahoma if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the 1973 case that legalized abortion.

Stitt signed the so-called “trigger” bill late Tuesday. The law would become effective once the attorney general determines the U.S. Supreme Court overrules Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that legalized abortion.

Oklahoma health department shuffles leadership positions

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Three agencies within the Oklahoma State Department of Health have new leaders, according to a statement from the department.

Deputy state epidemiologist Jolianna Stone will become become state epidemiologist, Dr. Jared Taylor moves from state epidemiologist to chief science officer and Dr. Gitanjali Pai has been appointed chief medical officer.

Ex-cop convicted of murder in daughter’s boyfriend’s death

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A former police officer in Oklahoma has been convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his daughter's boyfriend, but a federal jury acquitted him of first-degree murder.

The jury on Monday found Shannon Kepler, 60, “guilty of using and discharging a firearm in the second degree murder of Jeremey Lake, acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson said in a statement. It also found him guilty on an assault charge for shooting and wounding Lake’s brother.

Oklahoma Democrats file complaint on GOP senator’s comments

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Democratic leaders in the Oklahoma Senate filed a formal complaint against one of their GOP colleagues over sexually suggestive comments he made publicly about the vice president.

Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd and Democratic Caucus Chair Kevin Matthews filed the complaint late Monday against Sen. Nathan Dahm. In it, they allege Dahm violated Senate rules requiring members to maintain “the integrity and responsibility of his or her office.”

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma leader of the Young Democrats of America said Monday he’s launching a veto referendum on a bill signed by Oklahoma’s governor that seeks to crack down on protesters by increasing penalties for blocking roadways and granting immunity to motorists who kill or injure rioters.
