New York City’s Fifth Avenue was flooded with blue uniforms as thousands of NYPD officers gathered to pay their respects and say their farewells to rookie Officer Jason Rivera, who was killed in the line of duty last week.
Commissioner Keechant Sewell described Rivera’s infectious spirit.
“This has always been a city of lights, and police officer Jason Rivera was one of the brightest,” she said. “Jason rose to every challenge that crossed his path.”
NYC Mayor Eric Adams gave the eulogy (excerpts below):
“As I thought about him I could not help but to reflect on my life,” Adams said. “He decided to go inside and help from within. He was committed to that desire. And he did it for the right reasons.”
Adams called Rivera a hero, apologizing to his parents for their loss.
“I say to you we’re sorry. We’re sorry.”
