2020 Has Been a Wild Year for OSU Basketball

12/31/2020

Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe spent his holiday break alone in Stillwater.

Because of COVID restrictions, Moncrieffe was unable to return to his family in Canada. He hasn’t seen his folks since he has been in Stillwater.

“It was it was tough,” Moncrieffe said. “I, obviously, wanted to be back with my family. My mom was a little sad I couldn’t spend a break with her, but I just spent a lot of time on FaceTime with my family. That kind of made me feel at home a little bit. My sister was there, so that was good. At least they got to see one of their kids. It was tough, but I just spent a lot of time on the phone with them, and that kind of made it better.”

The year 2020 has been a bad one for a lot of people all around the world, and the Oklahoma State basketball program has had a lot of downs with it, too.

Last season, the Cowboys turned the calendar and started an eight-game conference losing streak. OSU kind of found its footing at toward the end of the season before the pandemic shut any would-be Cinderella story down.

On top of the pandemic, OSU got hit with sanctions this offseason. It wasn’t all bad (the star-studded recruiting class stayed in tact), but it hasn’t been easy.

“I just hope that when I wake up tomorrow, it’s not Dec. 32, 2020,” OSU coach Mike Boynton said. “If tomorrow’s Jan. 1, 2021, 2020 will have a nice bow on it, we’ll put it away. But you know, I always reflect on my seniors from last year. Feel horrible about the way, having gone through everything they went through, that their careers ended the way it did, something I’ll never be able to come to grips with.”

In just trying to play basketball this season, Boynton mentioned there is someone sticking a COVID test in his nose or mouth every 40 or so hours. He said he feels as if he has taken 1,000.

That won’t change when the calendar turns Friday, but it might still feel better that the cursed year of 2020 is over.

Moncrieffe said he is a daily improvement guy instead of a New Year’s resolution guy, but he does have some takeaways from this trying year.

“Biggest takeaway 10 years from now, I’d take away from this year will probably be just value the things that mean something to you, value family, value your close friends,” Moncrieffe said. “I got great coaches around me, so just value the people that really mean something to you and don’t value, you know, the stuff that doesn’t mean a lot. That will probably be the biggest thing I take away.”

Tylan Wallace Named AFCA All-American

12/31/2020

Tylan Wallace joins elite company at Oklahoma State as a two-time All-American.

Wallace was a second-team selection in the American Football Coaches Association’s All-American voting. He becomes the 14th player in program history to pick up All-American honors in two seasons and is the first since Quinn Sharp.

What’s almost more impressive is that Wallace was able to take a gap year between All-American honors after an ACL tear prematurely ended his junior season in 2019.

Wallace led the Big 12 with 922 receiving yards despite catching passes in just nine games. He also played only a half against Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl on Tuesday. Wallace caught a team-high six touchdown passes in his senior season.

Wallace made his mark on OSU’s record books, finishing fifth in career receiving yards and receptions. He finished sixth in receiving touchdowns.

Here is a list of OSU All-Americans since 2008:

Season Player Position
2008 Dez Bryant WR
2008 Perrish Cox KR
2008 Kendall Hunter RB
2009 Perrish Cox CB
2009 Russell Okung OL
2010 Justin Blackmon WR
2010 Kendall Hunter RB
2010 Quinn Sharp P
2010 Dan Bailey K
2011 Justin Blackmon WR
2011 Levy Adcock OL
2011 Grant Garner OL
2011 Markelle Martin S
2011 Quinn Sharp K
2011 Brodrick Brown CB
2012 Quinn Sharp K

Wrestling Mailbag: Best Orange and Black Matches HWT and More

12/31/2020

Wrestling season officially starts on Sunday so I thought I’d take to Twitter and answer some of your questions on the upcoming season. Let’s dig in.

Lance Owens@cow2boys2: Is AJ going to wrestle this year? AND how does Daton get back in the mix? How are we going to replace Nick?

AJ is definitely wrestling this season and will likely be the starter for the Cowboys at 197. Buzz out of the room is he’s looking really good so far. We saw some of it at Junior Nationals a few weeks ago, but expectations are definitely high there. Could potentially be an instant NCAA title contender if he stays healthy.

I don’t know for certain how Fix’s USADA suspension will impact his folkstyle wrestling. Nothing has officially been announced, but the expectation is he will suspended until Feb. 10 in both freestyle and folkstyle, which would put him back just in time for the 8-man Cowboy Challenge tournament on Jan. 14 and for the final Bedlam dual on Jan. 21, along with the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments. Fix will actually also be wrestling at the Orange and Black match this Sunday. It will be an interesting season for him, but he should get at least a few matches in before the NCAA tournament.

Coach Smith said earlier this year that 125 will be decided between Reece Witcraft (cutting down from 133), Jakason Burks, and Trevor Mastrogiovanni. Orange and Black matches on Sunday will be really intriguing to watch and find out how that’s playing out.

dan tero@terodan: Kaden? Back??

Yes. He will be at 149 this year, but all signs point pretty strongly to Boo Lewallen getting the start there. With all the awkwardness of this season and COVID-19’s impact, he’s certain to see some time in the lineup this year. It could be a somewhat interesting match if we see those two at the Orange and Black match.

Pokes@loaf23: How will the lower weights shake out when Daton is back? Jakason, Trevor, and Reese seem to be fighting for one spot. Also, what about Taco vs Plott? How do you see that working out. We have a ton of talent who need to be in the lineup…having a hard time figuring out how

I talked a little about 125 above. The No. 2 guy in that group will likely move up to 133 and fill in there until Fix gets back in February and will just be backup at that point. The nice thing is that they could still see some mat time in the Cowboy Challenge Tournament and are all young guys with redshirts still available. With the NCAA not counting this year towards eligibility, whoever ends up in that role at 133 will at least get some matches to help develop them and won’t burn up a year.

Taco vs. Plott will be really interesting. Before all the chaos of COVID rule changes set in, it made a lot of lineup sense for Montalvo to cut down to 174 and Geer to go back down to 184. That would give OSU a really strong lineup and setup Plott to have a redshirt year and not really impact the overall lineup much. Now that everyone gets a year back, all bets are off. Whoever is best should get the start. So if Montalvo’s at 174 and beats Plott, he should be the guy. If Plott is beating Montalvo, he should be the guy. If either of them go to 84 and beat Geer, they should be the starter there. I really have no idea who is best in all that.

Plott was incredible during his junior year of high school, but was banged up most of his senior year. Montalvo improved consistently throughout last season and looked like an All-American candidate in March. Plott’s strength and speed are impressive, Montalvo’s gas tank is unmatched. It’s another potential match that should be very interesting to watch on Sunday.

Pawhuska Poke@pawhuskapoke: What does heavyweight look like?

Luke the Drifter@LuketheDrifte14: Is Shawn Streck still a possibility to enroll 2nd semester or has that ship sailed?

Since these two tie in together a bit, I thought I’d lump them into one. I haven’t heard any additional news on Streck. Shawn Streck is a former Purdue heavyweight that attended NOC last year and was working on getting into and wrestling for OSU this season. I would assume since there hasn’t been anything come out about him, it’s unlikely that we see him this season.

Austin Harris was the guy last year and I would assume it’s his spot to lose at this point. On paper, Konner Doucet was the highest rated HWT recruit that OSU picked up last season and I would think could contend for the job possibly. HWT is a spot in the lineup that usually takes some development time though, so how ready he would be as a true freshman is tough to know.

Brad Wells@bwel9339: You giving updates from the ranking matches?

It’s a bit of a long story that I can’t completely share here, but I may or may not be in attendance on Sunday. Marshall Scott definitely will though and will keep everyone posted on how this goes.

Joe jeter@JeterJoe: What are going to be the tightest ranking matches and what’s your prediction on those matches?

OSU put out a release Wednesday on ranking matches and it did not include all of the specific matchups. So there are quite a few variables that are somewhat unclear. Theoretically OSU could match up anyone vs. anyone and not really look at this as something to decide starting spots. So who knows what matchups we might see? Also there could be injuries, COVID, and other things that come into play for this.

But for ones that make the most sense and most expect to happen, here it goes. Also, I hate picking intersquad matches for guys I cover, so nothing personal to anyone that’s reading this.

125 — Mastrogiovanni vs. Witcraft

Twenty-five is a bit of a cut for Witcraft, but if he’s managed to get down, I think this is the match to decide the 125 pound starter. Witcraft is so unique in his style that you feel like he could wrestle great and beat just about anyone but he also loses some matches you normally wouldn’t expect him to. I think the cut could get to him and if it becomes a factor and is hurting him, Mastro will take it. A healthy, Witcraft — who’s not hurting from cutting — could hit some big stuff and come out on top.

141 — Brock vs. Hone

There are regular season duals that don’t get this good of matchups. Two All-Americans battling for the job, this should be great. There’s still so much unknown about Brock’s injury and recovery that this is a hard one to pick, but I’m going to take him in a close low scoring match over Hone. I do think Hone’s top game is solid though and if he can ride Brock, he could pull it out. This one should be great!

174 — Plott vs. Montalvo or 184 — Montalvo vs. Geer

I think Montalvo has gotten down to 174 and him and Plott will be the match we see, but with COVID and other hurdles, I just don’t have some of the same access I normally do and don’t know for sure if he has.

That said, either one of these matches are great. I wrote a little about it above, but with Plott being hurt so much at the end of high school and not having much of a freestyle season, it’s just tough to know where he’s at.

Geer and Montalvo make a really interesting one as well. Experience, etc… I think might give the edge to Geer but would never count out Montalvo.

HWT — Harris vs. Doucet

Already mentioned above, but are any freshman ready to unseat Harris? Will be interesting to watch.

That’s all I have for this one. Looking forward to another year and another season of covering the Cowboys with you all.

Five New Years Resolutions for OSU Basketball in 2021

12/31/2020

A new calendar year is the perfect time to (try) and wipe the slate clean and start anew with New Year’s Resolutions. And no one needs it more right now than OSU basketball.

With a two-game losing skid to open league play (for the fifth consecutive season), what better time than the present to lay out some resolutions for 2021?

I’ve taken the liberty — and by that I mean I’m completely overstepping my bounds — to lay out some goals for the team as Big 12 play wages on. Here is to better times ahead, starting with ….

1. Better shooting

Oklahoma State ranked eighth last season among Big 12 teams in 3-point shooting percentage. Then it went out and landed transfers Ferron Flavors and Bryce Williams in hopes that shooting would better surround Cade Cunningham. But this season that has not (yet) been the case. OSU ranks ninth (out of 10 Big 12 teams) in 3-point shooting percentage, only .02% away from ranking dead last. And the best outside shooter this season — at least statistically — is Avery Anderson, who has taken just eight outside shots (and made half of them). Williams is hitting a respectable 36.0% from 3 while Flavors, one of the best catch-and-shoot spot-up marskman in college last season, is making just 25.6% of his 3s.

The solution is a regression to the mean for Flavors, whose shot I still trust, more opportunities for Bryce Williams, and hope that Rondel Walker, Isaac Likekele, Avery Anderson and Cade Cunningham can fill in to make big shots when needed. To that point, better shooting will be a byproduct of …

2. Better floor spacing

This is the reason why OSU smartly went out and added Ferron Flavors and Bryce Williams: They knew they needed to open up the floor so Cade could cook. Here’s just one example of how bad spacing has been, from the Texas game. Cade drives to his spot but two teammates are at the top of the key drawing zero defensive attention, and with no one in the corner, Cade is triple-teamed.

Here’s another example from the same game with better floor spacing. Incredibly, in this instance, Cade actually finishes in traffic despite drawing a triple team in the lane. Texas decided Ice in the corner being wide open was what they were willing to sacrifice, but most teams will sag to help here. This is an example of good floor spacing (and I’d argue a poor decision from Cade, though naturally it worked out because Cade is Cade).

As a stylistic note, OSU taking more 3-pointers would only improve floor spacing. Fewer than 25% of its total points this season are the byproduct of 3s, which ranks 264th among more than 350 Division I teams. Mike Boynton has stressed the importance of playing to the team’s strengths — and 3-point shooting is right now not a strength — but bumping that number up to around 30% seems like an attainable goal that would open the floor up and make team’s further respect the threat of outside shooting.

3. More Ice-Cade-Avery focus on offense

KenPom.com has a stat that effectively accounts for usage rate — %poss, a measure of personal possessions used while the player is on the court that assigns credit or blame to a player when his actions end a possession by either making a shot, missing a shot or committing a turnover. And I’m saddened to report that Likekele, who actually leads the team with 30 assists this season, ranks only ahead of Bernard Kouma in this department.

Cade is an excellent playmaker and passer — and clearly the team’s best option — but OSU should entrust him more. Instead, Kalib Boone actually ranks second on the team in this statistical measure, behind only Cade, despite committing a team-high 7.0 turnovers per 40 minutes — nearly double the player who ranks second on the team in that department.

Likekele and Avery have acquitted themselves well on and off the ball and should see an increased opportunity in the offense, which has been a confusing cluster despite all the talent it has.

4. Get back on defense

This is a simple resolution that, if not fixed, can drive a coach completely mad. In the Texas game, for instance, 35% of Texas’ 77 total points came either off turnovers or on fast breaks because OSU was either slow getting back or simply not getting back on defense quick enough. One way to fix that would be to cut down on turnovers — which have been a problem but haven’t been the only problem. The other way is to turn and run as soon as the possession changes. Giving up quick, easy looks on defense is a morale-killer that can change the course of a game. OSU’s defense is really a strength as a team, but if you don’t have time to set it up before teams are scoring, then that strength is almost entirely mitigated. It’s like having a shotgun in a sword fight but starting the battle two feet from your enemy — you have a distinct advantage but if you don’t have time to load it up you’re kinda screwed.

5. Taking better care of the ball

How OSU handles the ball can be affected by several of the aforementioned resolutions. If OSU can better space the floor and make more outside shots with more consistency, then Cade won’t consistently be driving into quadruple teams, Ice won’t face coverage from every angle and better decisions will result. As it stands now, OSU ranks almost exactly in the middle of the pack nationally in turnover %, committing nearly 15 turnovers per game. That number needs to be down to around 10-13 each game to have an edge, otherwise, you’ve gotta gain an advantage elsewhere in the game with defense or fast break points or an elite offense, none of which thus far have been totally reliable all season.

OSU opened the game with a pass-heavy scheme that shocked even Miami coach Manny Diaz. The Cowboys’ first 15 snaps were pass plays — this against a team that gave up 554 yards rushing in its previous game, against North Carolina. But Mike Gundy said Miami’s quickness at linebacker made OSU fear the run game would be limited. Give offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn credit — the early salvo worked.

• This TulsaWorld piece linking OSU and Miami through Jimmy Johnson is terrific. Two thoughts arose from reading:

  1. The parallels between Jimmy Johnson and Les Miles teeing up Pat Jones and Mike Gundy are so similar (while obviously one run included $165m from a benefactor).
  2. The hunger and desire to hire incredible assistants with Jimmy Johnson’s staff seems start to 2020 OSU. Pat Jones is quoted saying Johnson liked to hire “aggressive” people, just bringing in top notch assistants with high ceilings.

I love what Kasey Dunn does with receivers but I think OSU could stand for hiring a future head coach at offensive coordinator.

The Rundown: Mike Gundy Talks Tylan 2020 after Cheez-It Bowl Victory

12/30/2020

Mike Gundy is up to double-digit bowl wins.

Gundy’s Oklahoma State squad beat Miami 37-34 on Tuesday in the Cheez-It Bowl. Gundy met with reporters via Zoom after the game here is what he said.

On if the plan was always for Tylan Wallace to play only the first half

“Well, I don’t know if it was any particular time. We had just talked with him about at some point we wanted to get some of the other players in the game that were going to be there next year. And we want to protect him. There’s always things in the back of your mind that happens. I’m not so sure that what took place with Miami’s quarterback didn’t have a little bit of effect on us.

“I’m not saying that we had a plan for an exact point in a game, but our goal is to bring young men in and train them and get them a degree in three and a half or four years, teach them about life and do anything we can to make their life better. Obviously he has a future very, very few people have an opportunity for. Myself and Coach [Kasey] Dunn were very protective of him. We made a choice at that time to let some of the other players get in and compete, so we just didn’t have to hold our breath in that situation. What Tylan has done for us is he’s been unique compared to other players. I should say the majority of some of the other players that are as highly regarded as him from the standpoint he wanted to compete throughout the season and stay with it. That means a lot to us, and I think that’s going to greatly benefit him when it comes to draft day later on this spring.”

On what he saw from Brennan Presley

“Well, the same thing that I’ve seen from him the last three years of high school. What he has going for him is — well, Malcolm Rodriguez is sitting here next to me, but they have the same characteristic. They love to play football. They are unselfish. They are tough. They are athletic and they are not scared, and that’s what he is. He’s just going to get better and better with experience.

“He actually had a pretty significant injury in the Baylor game, one that in the past has kept players on the sidelines for as few as three weeks and up to four weeks. We actually encouraged him to maybe not play in this game based on his injury. And a week later, he just basically said, I want to play in this game. He started practicing and played. That’s what you get when you have a young man that loves to play the game. He’s not scared to compete.”

On Spencer Sanders

“He continues to improve and get better each game. Coach [Tim] Rattay has done a really good job with him. Coach Dunn puts him in a good position offensively to have success.

“The one area that he gained big strides in this year was his composure. His composure on the field, off the field, on the sideline; if something didn’t go well, his composure was really, really good. That allows a quarterback to get better in my experience of doing this for 31 years. Quarterbacks have to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations, and if they lose their composure, they are not comfortable. That’s where he’s made his biggest stride. So if he’ll continue to stay humble and work hard and train the way that he has in the offseason, then he’ll continue to have success at this level.”

On Brennan Presley

“Brennen loves to play football. He’s unselfish. He likes to compete, and he’s not scared. We’ve seen that from him for three or four years in high school football and so far, it’s coming true at this level for us.”

On the Cheez-It Bath

“The Cheez-It Bath is much better than the ice-cold Gatorade at my age; I can promise you that.”

On looking back at the crazy season

“I was really happy for our players. This win might be as satisfying and gratifying a win for me personally, selfishly, as any that I’ve had in my career. Just seeing the exhilaration and enjoyment on the players’ faces after the game. This was a really, really good college football game, and we beat a good football team. Miami is very talented and very athletic. I don’t know if anybody has done their research, but the last four years, they have had 26 players that are in a draftable position for the NFL that. Will give you some kind of idea of what kind of talent and players that they have.

“So with everything that’s gone on, when you look at what we’ve accomplished, you can call it like you want, but if we played a nonconference, we’re sitting here — pretty good chance we’re sitting here with another 10-win season with some pretty dramatic and considerable number of injuries early in the season that our players have rallied back from. The game tonight was a really good illustration of how our team has been. Early in the game offensively we couldn’t do anything wrong. In the second half, the defense went out and got two big stops right there in the end. The guys made plays and just found a way to win. Selfishly, for me, it’s as good a win as I’ve had in my career.”

On starting the game with a lot of passing

“Well, our game plan going in was to try to off-set some of the speed and strength that they had up front in their front six. They are really fast. Their backers run and get over the top of blocking schemes. We knew that we were going to have a few match-up problems trying to rush the football. So our goal was to try to throw the ball 25 times in the first half. Spencer did execute and play very well. The schemes that we came up with in the first half were very well designed in my opinion. And then when we got ahead by three touchdowns, they got in a little bit of a desperation mode where they started pressuring pretty much every play, and that wasn’t a really good match up for us.

“Once they started to smell blood, they just kept going and then we had to adjust halfway through the third period and how we want to attack them running the ball, and then some things we wanted to do throwing the ball based on them — them at some point got into a desperation, were going to blitz every snap, and it worked out well for them. Obviously they were smart and they stayed with it.”

Tre Sterling Announces Hell Return to OSU in 2021

12/30/2020

Oklahoma State safety Tre Sterling, a redshirt junior who led the Cowboys defense in tackles for loss and tied for the team lead in interceptions this season, announced shortly after the team’s Cheez-It Bowl win Tuesday night that he will return next season.

“I have been discussing my future in this sport and at this university and have come to a decision,” he said in part. “I will be returning next year to play the 2021 season.”

Unfinished business. pic.twitter.com/Cg35zVSyyk

— Tre Sterling (@sterling__trey) December 30, 2020

Sterling had a breakout season of epic proportions anchoring the back end of OSU’s defensive unit. He finished the year with 12 tackles for loss, 74 total tackles and two interceptions. In the Cheez-It Bowl, he posted a team-high 13 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, and accounting for 0.5 sacks in the game as well.

Kolby Harvell-Peel also has a looming decision about his future because he, too, is NFL Draft eligible. He battled injury off and on this season but entered the year as a potential All-American candidate.

Whether Harvell-Peel stays or goes, though, Sterling’s return is a boost to the secondary that, for the most part, will return plenty of experience next season. Tanner McCalister, Sean Michael Flanagan, Jason Taylor and Thomas Harper are all expected back and all have played roles for the defense this season.

Marshalls Notebook: Following along OSUs Cheez-It Bowl Win

12/30/2020

For the fifth time in the last seven seasons, the Cowboys are bowl champs.

Oklahoma State defeated Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl 37-34 on Tuesday in Orlando. I already laid out my 10 Thoughts on the game, but here is my notebook from a wacky way to end the 2020 season.

  • Tylan Wallace is casually practicing his Dez Bryant-inspired X before kickoff with an OSU cameraman.
  • Backstreet’s Birmingham’s Back
  • OSU’s starting offensive line is Springfield, Birmingham, Schneider, Woodard and Sills.
  • Miami gave up 554 rushing yards in its last game. On OSU’s first possession, the Pokes ran the ball zero times and scored. Eat that stat nerds.
  • Also, without a starting kicker, Gundy goes for it on four-and-medium from Miami’s 31. I wonder if there is a specific yard line where OSU punts from.
  • Players got a $400 Amazon gift card for competing in this game. Miami’s punter is probably trying to find a tattoo guy on Amazon.

  • After a touchdown run, LD Brown made the U hand sign and broke it over his knee. The Hurricane faithful aren’t going to take kindly to that if the Texas folk are any indication of disrespecting hand signs.

  • Is this going to be a boat race? A dog walk? A blowout? (It was not)
  • Brennan Presley is electric. He has two catches in OSU’s first three drives for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
  • This change of direction was immaculate:

  • Miami has showed up after spotting OSU a 21-0 lead to start the second quarter.
  • Presley stock should’ve been bought a long time ago, but if you can get your hands on some now, you should still turn a healthy profit.
  • OSU misses a field goal. This team has had a hard time running away from people. This next defensive series will be a big one.
  • Dang, D’Eriq King goes down on a gnarly looking knee injury. This game is just more fun with him in it. That stinks. I hope he is OK.
  • Update on a note from above: OSU punts from Miami’s 41 after a muffed Miami punt.
  • After a breakneck start, OSU takes a 21-10 lead into the half.
  • These Miami wide receivers might hate this backup quarterback. Three big-time drops since he has been in.
  • OSU kind of looks like a sprinter running a marathon.
  • To add to OSU looking lost, Spencer Sanders got his throwing hand stepped on after a third-down run.
  • A generous spot gives Miami a first down on fourth down, and the Hurricanes go on to score a touchdown but fail a 2-point conversion on another questionable officiating call.
  • These officials are as shaky as OSU right now. Equally stinking both ways, but yeesh.
  • After allowing 19 unanswered points, OSU is on a 10-0 run. This isn’t basketball.
  • Tylan Wallace is out the second half in what was apparently a premeditated decision from Mike Gundy.
  • Miami scores, and OSU maturely answers. Miami scores again, and OSU goes three-and-out.
  • What a PBU from Thomas Harper.
  • OSU has another three-and-out, but the Cowboys’ defense locks it up because 2020.
  • Good portions of the end: Josh Sills waves bye to Miami players, and Mike Gundy gets Cheez-Its poured on him. 2020.
