Oklahoma State Favored by 21.5 Points over Kansas

9/30/2020

Oklahoma State is a heavy favorite to improve to 3-0 this weekend as it heads to Lawrence, Kansas to take on Les Miles and his Kansas Jayhawks.

The Pokes are 21.5 point favorites in the game, according to odds from William Hill, the largest favorite OSU has been in a game this season.

OSU was a three-touchdown favorite (21 points) over Tulsa in its opener and a touchdown favorite last week against West Virginia in its conference-opener. The Cowboys did not cover in Game 1, but a two-touchdown margin of victory last week moved them to 1-1 against the spread on the year.

Here’s a look at the full gambling menu for those with rooting interests.

OSU vs. Kansas odds and ends
  • Favorite: OSU -21.5
  • Kansas money line: +900
  • OSU money line: -1600
  • Over/under: 54.0

Kansas is 0-2 against the spread this season. It closed as a 4.5 point favorite in its opener against Coastal Carolina before losing by 15, then last weekend, closed as 17 point dogs and lost by 33 to Baylor.

Oklahoma State Offers In-State Kicker/Punter Logan Ward

9/30/2020

The Cowboys have a good haul of in-state talent in their 2021 class thus far, and the Pokes are looking to add to it.

Deer Creek kicker/punter Logan Ward announced an Oklahoma State offer Tuesday evening.

Extremely blessed and excited to receive an offer from Oklahoma State University!! #GoPokes ??? pic.twitter.com/rkBHBxIGPn

— Logan Ward (@loganwardd) September 30, 2020
Who Is He?

Out of Deer Creek High School, Ward went 9-for-11 on field goal attempts as a junior last season, with his longest make being a 55-yarder.

He also played some tight end for the Antlers.

In the Rankings

Ward doesn’t have a 247Sports profile, but Kohl’s, a recruiting service for kickers and punters, ranks him as a five-star prospect.

The outlet ranks him as the No. 63 kicker and the No. 49 punter in his class.

“Ward had a strong showing at the 2019 Texas December Showcase and he backed that up with a great showing at the UC-Challenge. He excelled in his punting and was strong in the kickoff and field goals at the camp as well. He has developed into one of the better combo prospects in his class. Ward attended the Kohl’s National Scholarship Camp in July of 2020. At the 2019 NSC he showed very well in the FG portion of camp by scoring 29 points. His KO’s were also impressive and he moved up in our rankings because of his strong performance. Ward has a big season ahead of him!“

Chuba Tracker: Hubbard 10th OSU Rusher to Hit 3000 Yards

9/30/2020

To be a top 10 rusher at Oklahoma State, you now have to have rushed for 3,000 yards.

Chuba Hubbard eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark this past weekend, becoming just the 10th Cowboy rusher to do so. Hubbard now boasts a career mark of 3,028. In the Tulsa game, he surpassed Gerald Hudson (2,924) for 10th on OSU’s all-time list.

Rank Name Yards
1 Thurman Thomas 5,001
2 Terry Miller 4,754
3 David Thompson 4,318
4 Kendall Hunter 4,181
5 Barry Sanders 3,797
6 Ernest Anderson 3,780
7 Justice Hill 3,539
8 Tatum Bell 3,409
9 Joseph Randle 3,085
10 Chuba Hubbard 3,028

Having only a 10-game season hampers Hubbard’s ability a bit to climb up that list. He averaged 97 yards a game in OSU’s opening two. If he did that for the remaining eight games, he would finished the year with 3,804, just ahead of Barry Sanders.

What’s impressive (and kind of scary) is that Hubbard is only a redshirt junior. If he came back returns to OSU in 2021 (which seems unlikely at his point), he could catch Thurman Thomas. This year also doesn’t count toward athletes’ eligibility, so Hubbard could hypothetically have two seasons to set a truly unreachable mark.

Hubbard also got his 500th rushing attempt against West Virginia. He should crack into OSU’s top 10 in that this weekend, with Gerald Hudson sitting in 10th with 515.

Hubbard’s most impressive appearance on OSU’s careers lists is probably in his rushing yards per game. Through 28 career games, Hubbard has averaged 108.1 yards, third best in program history.

Rank Name Yards Per Game (No. of Games)
1 Barry Sanders 118.7 (32)
2 Terry Miller 113.2 (42)
3 Chuba Hubbard 108.4 (28)
4 Thurman Thomas 106.4 (47)
5 Justice Hill 98.3 (36)
6 David Thompson 98.1 (44)
7 Gerald Hudson 97.5 (30)
8 Dantrell Savage 95.1 (22)
9 Worley Taylor 92.4 (24)
10 Kendall Hunter 89 (47)

Hubbard’s 2020 season hasn’t started as hotly as expected, but it’s hard to deny numbers.

Three Things Les Miles Said ahead of the OSU-Kansas Game

9/30/2020

Year 2 of Kansas football’s Les Miles era isn’t off to a hot start.

The Jayhawks are 0-2 after losses to Coastal Carolina and Baylor. Now Miles hosts the school he used to coach: Oklahoma State. Here are three things KU’s coach said ahead of the matchup.

1. Quarterback Questions

There are questions in Stillwater whether Spencer Sanders or Shane Illingworth will start Saturday’s game for the Cowboys, but Miles’ QB questions are even more advanced.

There were three quarterbacks listed on KU’s depth chart this week with “or” among them. Thomas MacVittie, Miles Kendrick and Jalon Daniels are the suspects.

Mike Gundy has talked extensively about the importance of quarterback reps during practice leading into a game. It sounds like a tricky thing to do with two QBs, much less three.

“I think you start with a priority quarterback in a guy that takes repos initially, maybe even more team reps than the other two,” Miles said. “Then the next quarterback period will step in, and then there will be a possibility of a third quarterback and he would step in.”

MacVittie started the Jayhawks’ season-opener against Coastal Carolina (with his name misspelled on his jersey) but suffered a shoulder injury in it.

There was a funny exchange between Miles and a reporter at Miles’ news conference this week as to which shoulder MacVittie hurt.

“Did he hurt his throwing shoulder in the opener,” the reporter asked.

“I do not know,” Miles said. “… I do know. I’m being deceptive, but I’m being honest. I believe his shoulder will be fine. “

Kendrick replaced MacVittie and finished the Coastal Carolina game 15-for-24 with two touchdowns and an interception, but KU lost 38-23.

After throwing only two passes against Coastal Carolina, Daniels, a true freshman, started KU’s Big 12 opener against Baylor. He finished that game 19-for-33 with no touchdowns, no interceptions and he was sacked four times.

MacVittie threw one pass in Stillwater last season. It was intercepted.

2. Getting Pooka Williams More Involved

As bad as KU football has been the past decade, running back Pooka Williams has been a bright spot.

Williams, now a junior, has ran for 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons with the Jayhawks, but he isn’t off to a hot start in 2020.

Through two games, Williams has gotten just 26 touches where he has gained 143 yards and scored twice. Williams has essentially split carries this season with sophomore Velton Gardner, who has 25 carries for 151 yards and a score.

“I’d like to get [Williams] a few more touches to be honest with you,” Miles said. “The idea that the ball, and there’s only one of them, you’d like to get it around pretty regularly to the other spots. We like some of the other options that we have, to get the ball to them. Keeping Pooka fresh is also a key piece.”

3. Miles High on Hubbard

Chuba Hubbard’s 2020 season hasn’t yet lived up to the expectations his 2019 season set.

Yet still, Hubbard is fourth in the conference in rushing with 194 yards in two games, even with LD Brown’s uptick in carries.

Here is what Miles says makes Hubbard stands out from other ball carriers.

“He is a explosive, big, physical guy,” Miles said. “A tremendous running back. He’s got good vision. He’ll make a cut and make you miss. That will set him apart in my opinion. And combine all that with really quality speed.”

On Star-Studded OSU Roster Teven Jenkins Might Be its Top NFL Prospect

9/30/2020

This past offseason, the big questions on Cowboys’ fans mind were whether Chuba Hubbard and/or Tylan Wallace would return for the 2020 season. As it turns out, another Cowboys, perhaps equally important to the team’s succes,s was also pondering his future: Teven Jenkins.

Jenkins said put some thought toward a move to the NFL after last season, a season where he blocked for the nation’s leading rusher and was thought to be Oklahoma State’s top offensive lineman.

“It was a controversy for probably about two or three weeks,” Jenkins said. “I had to think about it internally by myself.”

Jenkins has showed NFL potential for the past few seasons, but there has been an even bigger uptick in the hype surrounding him this season.

He made Pro Football Focus’ offensive line of the week after the Tulsa game. That weekend PFF graded him highest among all offensive tackles that played. He scored a 91.7 out of 100.

Jenkins is also the third-highest returning offensive linemen in the country in terms of PFF grades. He was only behind Oregon’s Penei Sewell and Kentucky’s Darian Kinnard.

Jenkins could end up being the highest draft pick next year of what could be a solid draft class of Cowboys. Todd McShay recently said Jenkins could be a second-round pick.

“Teven is an interesting young man,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “He doesn’t even know how good he is, and he doesn’t know how much he’s worth, if you just want me to call it like it is. He is uncharacteristically strong. I watched him in the weight room this summer, I think he hit 225 like 35 times [on bench press]. They weren’t even counting. He was just doing it.

“He has tremendous feet. He’s got good leverage. He’s highly intelligent. His work ethic is getting better this year.”

Jenkins wasn’t always projected to be in this position. Coming out of Topeka, Kansas, Jenkins was the No. 1,011 player in the 2016 recruiting class. He chose OSU over offers from Kansas State, Nebraska, Louisville and Missouri.

Gundy said he has seen the potential Jenkins has, and Gundy said one day it can make Tenkins wealthy, wealthy man.

“I’ve actually told him several times over the last couple years, I was serious but somewhat joking with him in the weight room when there would be a bunch of guys working, and I said, ‘You know, Teven, can you name the one person in this weight room that’s worth $40 million?'” Gundy said. “And he looks at me like I’m trying to give him a haircut or something, and he says, ‘No.’ And I said, ‘You if you decide to work really hard. If you decided to just say you know what, I’m gonna do it, you’re the guy.’

“That’s the kind of talent that he has. If he just gets his mind focused on ‘That’s what I wanna do,’ that’s the level that he can get to.”

Former Cowboy heavyweight and two-time All American Alan Gelogaev has become a U.S. Citizen.

Congratulations to one of our all-time fan favorites Alan "Z" Gelogaev, on officially becoming a US citizen! ??#DynastyDefined I #GoPokes pic.twitter.com/L8zmoae76J

— OSU Cowboy Wrestling (@CowboyWrestling) September 24, 2020

Gelogaev, who was originally from Moscow, Russia, came to the United States and eventually Oklahoma State in 2008 via a connection he made with Olympians Daniel Cormier and Jamill Kelly. Kelly and Cormier were training in Russia at the time. Gelogaev struggled with some injuries throughout his career but when healthy was as exciting as they come.

We miss Alan Gelogaev. pic.twitter.com/Eu6JTI1qOz

— FloWrestling (@FloWrestling) August 23, 2018

Alan was a two-time All-American for the Cowboys in 2010 and 2013, finishing seventh and third at nationals. His 2011 and 2012 seasons were both cut short due to injuries.

Gelogaev came to Oklahoma State to pursue a degree and career in finance, and he went to New York City and worked for a hedge fund after college. He returned home to Russia briefly then came back to the United States and has now officially become a United States citizen.

Daily Bullets (Sept. 30): 2020 = 2009 Cowboy Football? O-Line Getting it Done

9/30/2020

The Daily Bullets are brought to you by Hoboken Coffee: Get 20% off your first order.

OSU Bullets

• Solid piece here from Bill Haisten likening the 2020 season to the 2009 season for Cowboy Football

• Dissecting the West Virginia game post-mortem unearthed this gem – OSU’s offensive line got the job done:

The Mountaineers managed six tackles for loss but only one sack. The Cowboys looked to get the ball out quickly with Illingworth, ran some max protection, and remarkably went 7-14 on third downs while picking up four of them with the run game, including a third and four and third and nine.

[Inside Texas]

How did the line have that kind of success? They nearly always had a tight end on the field:

Out of the Cowboys’ 63 total plays, I only counted a few times where they were in 10 personnel (one running back and no tight ends/Cowboy backs). The Pokes had at least one Cowboy back in on almost every play of the game.

[PFB]

• Pokes are one spot ahead of the (.500) Sooners in the latest AP poll

• Jim Knowles’ defense is giving up almost 20 points less per game than six of their conference brethren – some are twice that

• I hope I’m not the only one who’s been trying to find the right time to be the embarrassing dad and cabbage patch around the house this week.

• Good heavens – can you imagine how good this unit would have been with Collin Clay? (injured four-star lineman transfer from Arkansas)

2. Georgia – 79.9

• The LeBron – Pat Riley showdown in the Finals will be fun – also, does anybody else think Riley coached Iceland in the Junior Goodwill Games?
