Tre Sterling Signs with Green Bay Packers as Undrafted Free Agent

4/30/2022

Injuries probably hurt Tre Sterling when it came to draft weekend, but he’ll still get the chance to prove himself at the next level.

The former Oklahoma State safety Tre Sterling signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, according to Pro Football Focus NFL reporter Doug Kyed.

Sterling was a steady perform throughout his tenure in Stillwater but injury dinged his draft stock.

The former three-star prospect played in every game as a redshirt freshman in 2018 before establishing himself as a star in his sophomore year. He earned All-Big 12 honorable mention in both 2019 and 202 and entered 2021 as a Day 1 starter in the Cowboys’ touted secondary.

But a surgery in September, which was expected to end his season, at least limited it greatly. Sterling was able to return to the field in both the Big 12 Championship and the Cowboys’ Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame.

The Packers had 12 picks in this year’s draft but did not use a single one on a defensive back.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Former Oklahoma State football players Malcolm Rodriguez, Devin Harper and Christian Holmes were selected at the 2022 NFL Draft Saturday, as Rodriguez was chosen by the Detroit Lions with the 188th overall pick in the sixth round, Harper was selected by the Dallas Cowboys five picks later with the 193rd overall pick in the sixth round and Holmes was picked by the Washington Commanders with the 240th pick in the seventh round.

Josh Sills went undrafted this weekend, but he’ll get a chance in Philly.

The former Oklahoma State offensive lineman has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles, per 247’s Cody Nagel.

Sills started his career in Morgantown but didn’t take long to become an integral part of the Cowboys’ offense once he showed up in Stillwater. He played in every game for West Virginia as a redshirt freshman in 2017 and then was named to the All-Big 12 second team for the Mountaineers as a sophomore before missing the remainder of 2019 due to injury.

Sills landed in Stilly a year later and started every game up front for the Cowboys, having to fill multiple roles, in 2020. He earned All-Conference First-Team honors in each of the last two seasons.

The Eagles only had five draft picks this year, but both offensive players they selected went toward solidifying their front line and supporting QB Jalen Hurts. They drafted Nebraska center Cam Jurgens and then SMU tight end, and another former Bedlam foe, Grant Calcaterra.

Kolby Harvell-Peel Signs with Houston Texans as UDFA

The All-American safety is headed home, or close to it.

Former Oklahoma State safety Kolby Harvell-Peel is signing a deal with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network.

The dynamic DB made an instant impact as a true freshman in 2018 and has been a staple and a star on the Cowboys’ defense ever since. Harvell-Peel capped his decorated OSU career by earning third-team All-American honors in 2021 as well as a spot on the All-Big 12 First team.

Harvell-Peel was projected to be drafted as high as the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft, but did not hear his name called from the stage in Las Vegas. Now he will get a chance to prove himself in his own backyard. He hails from College Station, Texas, just an hour and a half northwest of Houston.

Jaylen Warren Signs with Pittsburgh Steelers as Undrafted Free Agent

Jaylen Warren will get a shot in Steel City.

The former Oklahoma State running back did not get selected in this year’s NFL Draft but he did find a landing spot. The Cowboys’ leading rusher is signing a deal as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to multiple reports.

Warren made a huge impact during his short time in Stillwater. The former Utah State transfer didn’t see his breakout game until Week 3, missed the Big 12 championship game against Baylor and was limited by injury before that, but he still rushed for over 1,200 yards and 11 scores earning Big 12 Offensive Newcome of the year.

The Steelers have a loaded backfield with the likes of Najee Harris, Benny Snell Jr. and others on board, but they did not take a running back in the draft.

Tay Martin Signs with San Francisco 49ers as Undrafted Free Agent

4/30/2022

Tay Martin didn’t hear his name called during this year’s NFL Draft, but the Cowboys’ top target didn’t take long to find a suitor in free agency.

The former Oklahoma State wide receiver will get a shot in the Bay Area. He’s signing as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Martin came to the Cowboys by way of Washington State in 2020 but had to compete with the likes of Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner, both leagued, for catches. Then in 2021, he stepped into the role of Spencer Sanders’ top target and thrived. He earned All-Big 12 second-team honors after amassing 1,046 yards and 10 scores on 80 catches.

The 49ers drafted just one wide receiver, SMU’s Danny Gray in the third round. Fuel for fire, in 10 games, Gray caught 49 balls for 803 yards and nine TDs.

Holmes spent his first four seasons in Columbus but found a home in Stillwater. He played 10 games for the Missouri Tigers as a true freshman and was expected to vie for starting reps in Year 2 before a shoulder injury necessitated a second-season redshirt. He played every game for Mizzou in 2018 and 2019 starting a total of 12 games between the two.

Holmes was an immediate impact play for the Pokes in 2020, appearing in all 11 games of the COVID- shortened season and starting two. He returned for his Super Senior season and added to his resume with a career-best 39 tackles, helping him earn a spot on the All-Big 12 second team.

Holmes joins linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Devin Harper as the third Cowboy selected in this year’s draft. Washington ranked 29th in the NFL in pass defense a year ago and cornerback was tabbed as a key need for the Commanders this draft, but Holmes is the first DB selected by the team.

Dallas Cowboys Draft Devin Harper in Sixth Round of 2022 NFL Draft

4/30/2022

The Dallas Cowboys drafted OSU linebacker Devin Harper with their sixth round pick of the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday. Harper was taken with the 193rd overall pick, just five spots after teammate Malcolm Rodriguez was selected by the Detroit Lions also in Round 6.

Dallas made Harper its second linebacker to be drafted in this year’s event alongside LSU star Damone Clark, who surprisingly was taken a round earlier despite the fact he’s expected to miss the upcoming NFL season because of an injury and subsequent surgery. He’s the fifth defensive player to be drafted by Dallas thus far.

Harper rose in the ranks behind a plethora of talented backers including Devante Averette, Chad Whitener, Justin Phillips and Amen Ogbongbemiga and battled through injuries over his first five seasons in Stillwater. But 2021 was his year to shine and Harper, along with Malcolm Rodriguez, locked down the middle of the field.

He was second only to Rodriguez on the team in tackles, grabbed 11 tackles for loss, and his six sacks were the most among non-edge rushers. After taking advantage of an extra year because of COVID, he emerged as one of the most talented inside backers in the Big 12.

Dallas drafted a star with its first round pick last year in linebacker/edge rusher Micah Parsons but its linebacker spot was in need of a talent upgrade this offseason. It brings back Leighton Vander Esch as one of its starters but has a hole at middle linebacker that Harper could help address on a team that desperately — desperately — needed a talent overhaul on its defense.

Malcolm Rodriguez Taken in Sixth Round of the 2022 NFL Draft by Detroit Lions

4/30/2022

OSU’s tackle leader is headed to MoTown.

Former Oklahoma State linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez was selected with the 188th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.

Rodriguez leaves a big hole in the middle of Oklahoma State’s defense after leading the Cowboys in tackles in each of the last three seasons and finishing second as a sophomore in 2018 before. He was the first OSU linebacker to be named an All-American since 1981 after leading the Big 12 in takedowns in 2021. Now he becomes the first Cowboy linebacker drafted since 1995.

Rodriguez was the first Cowboy to hear his name called this draft weekend. The Lions have gone defense-heavy in this year’s draft, and for good reason. Four of the Detroit’s first six picks so far have added talent to a defense that ranked 31st out of 32 NFL teams in both team defense and scoring defense.

OSU Baseball: Cowboys Top Texas in Top 10 Matchup

4/30/2022

The Longhorns matched the Cowboys run for run for most of Friday night, but Zach Ehrhard put the Pokes ahead for good late.

Oklahoma State defeated Texas 8-6 on Friday night in Austin after Ehrhard, a freshman from Florida, doubled to left center in the top of the ninth inning scoring a pair of runs. That led to Nolan McLean, who started the night at third base for OSU, to take to the mound in the bottom of the inning where he sent the home fans back to their cars disappointed.

— OSU Cowboy Baseball (@OSUBaseball) April 30, 2022

Ehrhard was the star of the show for the Pokes on the night. He went 3-for-5 at the dish with the two RBIs. The performance moved his season batting average to .312, which is second-best among Cowboys with at least 25 at-bats.

Connors State transfer David Mendham also had a solid performance at the plate. He was 2-for-4 with both of his hits being solo home runs. They were his fifth and sixth home runs on the year.

It was a yo-yo of a game. The Pokes took the lead in the second with Mendham’s first home run of the day, but the Longhorns responded with a game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the fourth.

Then it was the Cowboys’ turn, as the Pokes poured on three runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Jake Thompson two-run bomb and a Roc Riggio RBI single. But, Texas answered with a three-run fifth.

McLean and Mendham hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning. McLean’s round-tripper was his team-best 10th of the season. That gave the Cowboys a 6-4 lead, but Texas again answered, scoring runs in the seventh and eighth to tie it at 6, setting up Ehrhard’s game-winning double.

All-American Justin Campbell got the start on the bump for the Cowboys. It wasn’t his best outing of the year, as he gave up four runs off eight hits in five innings of work. However, his five strikeouts were enough to get him to an even 100 on the season.

Roman Phansalkar came on in the sixth. He went two innings where he allowed one unearned run off three hits. Trevor Martin was awarded the win when he came on in the eighth. He pitched the sole inning, giving up a run off one hit while striking out two. Martin set up McLean’s third save of the season.

The Cowboys and Longhorns will go again Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Austin. The game will be televised on the Longhorn Network.
