If only for a game, the Big 12 returned to its high-scoring form of yesteryears. Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 50-44 on Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium, and the Cowboys’ offensive production came from an unlikely source. With Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown both out nursing injuries, Dezmon Jackson ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns in his first start. A junior college transfer from Hutchinson Community College (Kansas), Jackson had only 18 carries for 135 yards at the DI level entering Saturday. He scored all three of the Cowboys’ first-half touchdowns, starting with a 1-yard run out of the I-formation. It was his first career TD. Jackson started the second quarter with a 7-yard TD run. He then scored on another 7-yard scamper on the Pokes’ next drive. As good as he was, Jackson just provided a portion of the Cowboys’ scoring, which came in a variety of ways. OSU scored an onslaught of third-quarter touchdowns, all coming from different phases. The third started with a Tech touchdown that gave the Red Raiders a field goal lead. Trying to harness the momentum, the Red Raiders attempted a surprise onside kick, and it went about as poorly as possible. Jason Taylor caught it off a hop and promptly returned it 48 yards for a touchdown. It was OSU’s first kick return score since Tyreek Hill ran one back against Kansas in 2014. That made it 28-24 Cowboys for a few moments. On Tech’s next possession, Tre Sterling intercepted an Alan Bowman pass and housed it 65 yards the other way. The Pokes’ last score if the third quarter came off a beautiful ball from Spencer Sanders. Sanders stood in the pocket and took a hit while perfectly placing a 27-yard TD pass into Tylan Wallace’s arms. Wallace’s big day will probably be overshadowed by the other stuff that went on, but OSU’s senior wide out showed out on Senior Day. He finished with seven catches for 129 yards and the touchdown. After having a nightmare of a game against the Red Raiders last season, Sanders redeemed himself this year. He finished 19-for-31 for 222 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 78 yards and another score. Sterling also had an outstanding outing. He had nine total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and the touchdown off the INT. Defensively, OSU played decently but gave up a ton of chunk plays. The Red Raiders scored touchdowns from 59 yards, 24 yards, 48 yards, 70 yards, 32 yards and 31 yards. Instead of bend but don’t break, OSU’s defense was break but don’t bend. The Red Raiders certainly made things interesting late, scoring two touchdowns in the final four minutes, but Tech’s final onside kick attempt went out of bounds. From there, Jackson was able to run out the clock. With the win, OSU’s home schedule is finished, as the Cowboys will be on the road against TCU next weekend before ending the regular season with a trip to Waco. Boone Pickens’ name was already immortalized on the Cowboys’ stadium, but now his likeness is immortalized outside the house he build. Oklahoma State unveiled a statue of Pickens on Saturday morning west of Boone Pickens Stadium. Here are photos from Saturday’s ceremony, with all of these photos coming from Bruce Waterfield of OSU Athletics. The Cowboys will go orange-heavy for their final home game of 2020. Oklahoma State will wear an orange OSU brand helmet, orange jersey and white pants for its morning tilt with Texas Tech. It’s just the third time OSU Has worn this color combo and first with this lid. OSU beat Texas Tech in O-O-W all the way back in 2012 and lost to Baylor in the same color scheme last year. Oklahoma State All-American running back Chuba Hubbard will miss Saturday’s game against Texas Tech, a source confirmed to Pistols Firing. All-Conference tackle Teven Jenkins is also expected to miss the game, according to a report from Marshall Levenson of SI. Cody Nagel of 247Sports first reported the news of Hubbard. Hubbard has been banged up much of the last month and he battled through injury coming into the Bedlam game last week before an in-game incident in which he appeared to re-aggravate an ongoing ankle ailment. Hubbard played through the injury, but was clearly hobbled by it. Hubbard’s backup, LD Brown, has been dealing with an injury himself, a source told Pistols Firing, putting his status for Saturday’s game up in the air. Should both Hubbard and Brown be out, OSU will likely turn to former junior college running back Dezmon Jackson to fill a role as a workhorse. Jackson has just 18 carries on the season for 135 yards, with a team-high 7.5 yards per carry. Freshman running back Dominic Richardson could also see some playing time. Off a tough loss, the Cowboys are ready to get back on the horse and back in the fight. The Cowboys landed the No. 1 class for 2020, put together another great one for 2021, and look primed for another great one in 2022 after two big commitments Jordan Williams and Anthony Ferrari announced this week that they would be joining the Cowboys in the future. Those two, along with three other Oklahoma State commits, all made the Cliff Keen Preseason All-American Team, Track Wrestling announced. 1st Team: Travis Mastrogiovanni (152) In related news, one of the preseason All-Americans Kyle Haas did not sign with the Cowboys on signing day. I’ve confirmed that he is still coming to Oklahoma State. The post Five OSU Commits Named to Cliff Keen Preseason All-American Team appeared first on Pistols Firing. The Pistols Firing staff convened to discuss the Pokes’ final home game of the season and how we see things shaking out. Kyle BooneFinal Score: Oklahoma State 35, Texas Tech 17 OSU wins if… its offense finds rhythm. Tech owns second-worst defensive unit in the Big 12 this season according to ESPN’s SP+, ahead of only Kansas. If the Pokes can find a groove and put up some numbers with a nice balanced attack, I trust that the defense plays like the defense has much of the season and gives OSU a chance to pull away late. Player of the Game: Spencer Sanders. After a three-INT outing against Tech last season in a loss, Sanders will come prepped and ready for a bounceback. He’s coming off a disappointing loss in which he was effectively benched in Bedlam, too, so I expect he’ll be plenty motivated. Marshall ScottFinal Score: Oklahoma State 24, Texas Tech 14 OSU wins if… the Pokes take care of the football. Texas Tech isn’t a world-beating team, and as good as it would be for the Cowboys to dominate, they should be able to win if they just don’t inflict too much friendly fire. Player of the Game: Tylan Wallace. When in doubt, throw the ball to No. 2, especially on Senior Day. Let’s look at four things to know ahead of OSU’s matchup with Texas Tech. 1. OSU is Slipping Against Tech LatelyMike Gundy has owned Texas Tech during his tenure, going 11-4 including a 9-0 streak from 2009-17. Currently only Kansas has lost more times (12) to Gundy among Big 12 teams. But the Cowboys have dropped two-straight to the Red Raiders with an upset Big 12 opener in Stillwater two years ago followed by that abysmal five-turnover letdown in Lubbock a year ago. The Cowboys will be motivated to get that Crimson taste out of their mouths from Bedlam and Tech could oblige. The Red Raiders are just 3-5 on the season with their only conference wins being at home against Baylor and West Virginia. Tech has yet to win a road game in three tries. 2. Red Zone TDs Are CrucialOSU has not been very good at finishing once it gets deep into enemy territory so far in 2020. Against OU last week, the Pokes scored just one touchdown on four trips to the red zone, totaling 13 points. That accounts for 15 points left on the field. That wouldn’t have made the difference in Bedlam alone, but that game looks a lot different late if OSU’s offense is able to match Sooner TDs instead of settling for 3. The Cowboys would have been down just 6 entering the fourth quarter. OSU enters the Tech game dead last at 41.4 percent (only four teams are lower in the FBS). Conversely, among Big 12 teams, Texas Tech is T-3rd scoring touchdowns instead of field goals on 66.7 percent of its red zone trips. But the Red Raiders are last in the league TD percentage allowed in the red zone allowing 67.5 percent. Let’s hope that helps the Cowboys finish some of those extended drives in the end zone. 3. Take Care of the BallThe Cowboys sit at No. 8 (-4) in the conference in turnover margin, but just below them, and ahead of only Kansas (-6), is Texas Tech at -5. Neither team has necessarily been careful with the football, but the good news — at least for OSU — is that neither has been very good at dispossessing opponents. When you look at the raw TO numbers for the Big 12 there is a straight through line dividing the two halves of the league in forms of forcing TOs. Six teams that have forced either 11 or 12 turnovers and four have much fewer takeaways. Both OSU and Tech are on the lesser side. 12 Takeaways — Baylor, Texas, West Virginia, Iowa State 7 Takeaways — Texas Tech Whether or not that means we see a clean game on Saturday remains to be seen, but if the Cowboys can hold onto the tock, they should be in pretty good shape to move to 6-2 and enjoy their Senior Day activities. 4. A Strange Senior DayIt’s unbelievable how quick these come in the year. The Cowboys still have have two more road games remaining on their regular season slate but this Saturday could potentially be the final home game for 22 seniors. It’s unclear exactly which seniors will take up the NCAA on its COVID eligibility extension that gives fall and winter sport athletes an additional year. Junior Chuba Hubbard is assumed to be headed to the NFL following this year, as is senior wideout Tylan Wallace. He all but announced his intentions on Twitter. It’s important to point out that taking part in Senior Day exercises does not preclude a player from returning, and abstaining does not mean a player is coming back. Here’s just some of the big name seniors that could be playing their last game at BPS: Tylan Wallace, LD Brown, Teven Jenkins, Rodarius Williams, Malcolm Rodriquez, Amen Ogbongbemiga, Dillon Stoner, Calvin Bundage, Landon Wolf, Cam Murray and Logan Carter.
