The Cowboys had their worst defensive outing of the season in Bedlam, but their per game stats are still solid. With the Sooners’ high octane offense out of the way, Oklahoma State’s defense should be able to lower those averages a bit more in games against Texas Tech and Baylor to end the regular season. Let’s take a gander at how OSU’s 2020 defensive stats compare with those of Mike Gundy’s other 15 teams.
This 2020 defense is still right up there with Gundy’s best despite giving up 41 points and 492 total yards against the Sooners. Before this season, Gundy’s best two defenses came in 2009 and 2013. Let’s look a little more closely at the comparisons with those years.
It’s so tight. The big difference with the 2020 defense and those two are how the Pokes get off the field. In 2009 and 2013, OSU was getting off the field with turnovers, while still being good on third down. In 2020, the Cowboys aren’t creating as many turnovers but are great on third down. As of now, it’s probably objective to say which defense was the best, but with at least two games to go, OSU’s defense still has the chance to turn an arguably into an inarguably. Cade Cunningham will make his Gallagher-Iba Arena debut Saturday. Oklahoma State hosts Texas Southern on Saturday evening, a team that brought in some players OSU fans might be familiar. The most obvious being former Cowboy Michael Weathers. Weathers sat out the 2017-18 season on Mike Boynton’s bench after transferring in from Miami (Ohio). He played in 16 games the following season where he averaged 9.2 points a game for the Pokes before being dismissed from the team. Texas Southern’s roster also boats Galen Alexander, who played at Georgetown last season when the Hoyas won in GIA. Alexander scored five points and had seven rebounds in that game. Here is a quick preview of the matchup. Viewing Info Time: 6:30 p.m. Saturday Oklahoma State’s Projected Lineup

Prior to Saturday’s kickoff against Texas Tech and other Senior Day activities, Oklahoma State will posthumously honor super donor T. Boone Pickens with the unveiling of a nine-foot bronze statue in his likeness. Pickens is just the third person to be memorialized by a statue on OSU’s campus, joining former university president Henry Bennett and Nancy Randolph, OSU’s first African-American student. Boone’s statue will rest at the west end of the stadium that holds his namesake. The ceremony will take place before kickoff, at 8:45 a.m., with Burns Hargis, OSU athletic director Mike Holder and Mike Gundy are listed as speakers. Fans can watch the ceremony live on Facebook and on YouTube. The post How to Watch the Unveiling of T. Boone Pickens Statue appeared first on Pistols Firing. Oklahoma State’s coaching staff scored a huge win on the recruiting trail on Thanksgiving day as junior college offensive line prospect Caleb Etienne, a 6-foot-8, 310-pound tackle, committed to the Pokes over South Carolina, Arkansas and a handful of other programs. Etienne comes to OSU via Fort Scott Community College, which is located in Fort Scott, Kansas. He’s originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. His path to OSU is a winding one. In 2018 he garnered tons of interest from across the country and committed to Ole Miss before backing away from that pledge ahead of 2019 signing day. His decommitment came just prior to enrolling at the junior college, so it’s possible he failed to qualify academically and thus was forced to go the JUCO route. His commitment gives OSU a massive boost in its 2021 recruiting class ahead of next month’s early signing period. He’s the second listed offensive line pledge of the cycle, and he comes to Stillwater positioned to play immediately because of his experience and resume. With Teven Jenkins NFL-bound and OSU struggling to have enough depth along the offensive line, he could be a major addition that plays a big role next season. If there were any questions as to which quarterback the Cowboys would use this weekend, those may have been answered. Freshman Shane Illingworth tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright. Illingworth has played in four games for Oklahoma State this season. He played in Saturday’s Bedlam game in relief of an injured Spencer Sanders. This season, Illingworth has completed 41 of his 70 passes for 549 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. OSU announced three players had tested positive when the athletic department released numbers Monday. The Cowboys play Texas Tech at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Boone Pickens Stadium. Illingworth will be unavailable, as he has to quarantine for 10 days. The post Report: OSU Quarterback Shane Illingworth Tests Positive for COVID-19 appeared first on Pistols Firing. Cunningham finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in his debut. Here is everything he said in his postgame news conference. On playing his first game “It was fun. It was fun. I think that’s the biggest thing to say. We haven’t been able to play in a long time, so getting to be out there and finally being able to compete with all my teammates, we’re all on the same team instead of competing with each other, it was fun.” On his performance and the team’s performance “I think me personally, I know I competed hard. I played hard. I think I could’ve took care of the ball a little bit better than what I did. Had a couple too many turnovers, but other than that, I think really just my competitiveness and my effort was the best thing for me. “As a team, we played hard, we played together. I think we can get a lot better, but it’s the first game. We haven’t played in a long time, and it’s our first time all playing together. So, lots to work on, but it’s easy to learn from a win.” On his defensive performance “I think I had a couple really good rotations, a couple of really good stops personally, but it was my first time out there on the college level. It’s something to learn from. I didn’t think I was a poor defender out there, but I think I could really turn into a really good defender. It was just something to learn from and grow from.” On how the team rebounded “I think we rebounded the ball really well. We had three guys in double digits for rebounding, myself, Keylan [Boone] and Isaac [Likekele]. I think as a team we rebounded pretty well. I think on the offensive end, we could’ve got a couple more offensive rebounds. For the most part, I feel like we rebounded pretty well.” On Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe’s motor “I think that’s the biggest thing for him. His skillset, he’s so talented. He’s so gifted physically. When he plays hard, it’s hard for teams to stay in front of him and stop him. Having that today, I think he brought a big burst off the bench for us, and I think he’s gonna be able to continue to do that.” On his aggressiveness “It’s hard to rate. I just kinda find myself through the game. I think whenever they went into the zone, I think I could’ve been a little bit more aggressive, just finding spots to get open and get shots off. But for the most part, I think I pretty much played through the system and played for the team, and I think we played well.” On if his first game went as expected “I didn’t really know what to expect, really. I think that’s the biggest thing. I came in pretty open-minded and ready to adapt to whatever the game looked like. I think I did that pretty early in the game and after that, I got comfortable.” On playing in Arlington, his hometown “I think being home was what brought me more comfort. I got to have my whole family who’s been with me since I’ve been playing basketball since I was a little kid. Having them there, they haven’t been able to see me in a game for a long time, so I think that just kinda brought comfort and allowed me to be me.” On what the limited crowd size felt like “It was definitely different. It was definitely different. UTA actually did a pretty good job. Their fans were pretty loud in there. We could definitely hear them, but it was definitely different not being able to see a packed gym or anything. At the end of the day, we’re there to play basketball. We finally got to do that. It was fun.” On if it’s going to be an adjustment playing with limited fans throughout the year “Definitely, but it’s an adjustment for both teams. Just finding a way to play through it and play together as a team to bring energy from the bench and things like that, I think that’s the biggest thing a team can do. I think our bench was really good being loud for us. Our coaching staff was loud for us, so it really helped us out.” The post Everything Cade Cunningham Said after His First Game appeared first on Pistols Firing.
