The move to oust Speaker Johnson from the chair has heated up today.
Thomas Massie just publicly joined Marjorie Taylor Greeen in calling for Johnson to be pushed out.
Recall that Marjorie Taylor Greeen announced that she would move to oust Johnson on April 9th â after she circulated a five-page public letter to explain her decision.
(Read more on that earlier story by clicking the image below.)
MTGâs shock move initally drew a cool response from her GOP colleagues â many of whom called the move âprematureâ and âunhelpful.â
So what has changed their minds?
Well, for starters, Speaker Johnson got the 702 âwarrantless surveillanceâ bill reauthorized â even though the FBI used it to spy on the Trump campaign. Thatâs after President Trump called for the bill to be killed and after 19 GOP members managed to temporarily halt the re-authorization.
Those failures were enough for Rep. Thomas Massie to adopt MTGâs position this morning.
Massie made it clear that Mike Johnson had already capitulated to the Democrats by passing an omnibus spending bill that exceeded even Speaker Pelosiâs highest year of spending, and then he doubled down on that astonishing betrayal by passing the domestic warrantless surveillance program that President Trump had publicly demanded should be killed.
Johnson was forced to address the mounting rebellion this morning in front of the TV cameras.
Itâs strange to watch Johnson pretend to be Moses (âIâm saving the country!â) as he defends the entire Democrat agenda that heâs personally passed (with too much eyeliner on for some reason) while trying to claim that opposing Trumpâs call on FISA really means that heâs a âwartimeâ leader in âdangerousâ and âunprecedentedâ times.
We are lucky, you understand, to have the steady hands of Speaker Johnson on the wheel â according to Speaker Johnson.
Thereâs a word for this sort of thing, and the word is: chutzpah.
Whatâs truly dangerous and unprecedented is watching the GOPâs House leader betray his own voters and his own partyâs nominee for the White House right out in the open with only seven months remaining before the next election.
The only possible explanation for Johnson driving his political career off the cliff in such a spectacular and speedy fashion is that he has no choice. Heâs either compromised by the national security state or heâs compromised by the corporate interests which control the GOP establishment.
So Johnson is going to keep staring straight into the eyes of GOP voters while he spits on them and calls it rain until a few more congressmen understand the peril that Johnson has created for them, and they collectively put him out to pasture.
Meanwhile, adding to the escalating political mayhem, Mike Lee warned people from the Senate floor that Chuck Schumer was trying to prevent the Senate from taking up the impeachment of DHS Secretary Mayorkas â at all.
That impeachment, you might recall, was completed in February.
Whatâs happening here? How could the Senate just ignore the House?
You might have noticed: when the Democrats want Trump to be impeached, the GOP obliges them â twice. When the GOP wants Mayorkas to be impeached, the Democrats suddenly have the power to ignore the Constitution at their leisure.
Howâs that possible? Itâs possible because the Republican Party has essentially merged with the Democrat Party for all intents and purposes.
Thereâs only one agenda that exists in Washington now and thereâs only agenda being funded. You know the details: More aid for Ukraine. More aid for Israel. More aid for illegal aliens. More money for the FBI. More money for climate change. More money for abortion. More money for transgender surgery. More money for everyone but you.
Itâs possible because the illusion of Americaâs two-party system has evaporated right before your very eyes.
Thereâs only one party.
