Education has become one of the biggest issues, especially for parents. In the last Virginia gubernatorial election, the fight surrounding public education almost single-handedly won Glenn Youngkin the governorship. We can reasonably expect the issue to remain important going into the midterms and possibly into the 2024 election cycle.
Arizona just passed the gold standard in education policy, says Corey DeAngelis, National Director of Research at the American Federation for Children. According to the RedState, House Bill 2853 extends the state's school choice voucher program, providing the possibility for all families to take advantage of the available $7,000 vouchers each year.
"This win is the biggest school choice victory in U.S. history," DeAngelis said. He added that it should start "friendly competition" between Republican states to see who can provide the best education possibilities.
To that end, Arizona state Representative Shawnna Bolick threw down the gauntlet and challenged America's Governor.
"We blew the top for educational freedom last Friday when both chambers of the Arizona legislature passed universal ESAs. Educational freedom wins! I have one thing to say: Governor DeSantis, Arizona is the best state for school choice, not Florida."
So far, I haven't seen DeSantis pick it up, but if there's going to be a state to one-up Arizona, I wouldn't be surprised to see it be Florida. Education has been a big part of DeSantis' platform, especially after championing the anti-groomer "Parental Rights in Education" bill earlier this year.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is expected to sign the new legislation into law as soon as it hits his desk.
I hope to see all red states begin competing against each other, providing the best possible opportunities for the children of their state to draw parents and businesses into their borders. There's no doubt as blue states continue to dump untold millions into their failing public systems, Republican-led states will become the destinations for a great education.
