Is Mike Johnson our most based House Speaker in 140 years? Today’s show gets into that.
The House elected Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as its 56th speaker after three Republican nominees failed to win the gavel as a result of McCarthy getting pushed out of the role.
After being elected, Johnson said in a statement that he “will advance a comprehensive conservative policy agenda, combat the harmful policies of the Biden Administration, and support our allies abroad. And we will restore sanity to a government desperately in need of it.”
But where does he stand on the issues?
Johnson, who is a devout Christian, once proposed legislation to make it a crime to transport a minor across state lines to get an abortion without “satisfying parental involvement law.”
He served as senior legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian law firm committed to "protecting religious freedom, free speech, marriage and family, parental rights, and the sanctity of life."
After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Johnson released the following statement, “Today is an historic and joyful day. After nearly a half century, the Supreme Court has finally corrected its egregious error and returned the fateful policy decision over legalized abortion to the people and their elected representatives—where it has always belonged. No real ‘constitutional right’ to abortion ever existed. The Court invented it out of thin air. House Republicans will continue to stand for the sanctity of human life and hold the Biden Administration accountable for any future attempt to impede the policy decisions of pro-life states.”
During his time in the Louisiana state legislature, Johnson filed a bill called the "Louisiana Marriage and Conscience Act” in an effort to keep the government from discriminating against people over their view of marriage.
"He does fall in line with a lot of mainstream Republican views but he would also be considered Trump populus in some ways,” Crowder said.
Johnson defended Trump during the Democrat-led House impeachment hearings. He also questioned the results of the 2020 election and said we should repeal Section 230.
"[The left] can't stand this guy, then again they hate every Republican speaker. The reasons that they dislike him are reasons that I would like him,” Crowder said. “If they are going to hate you anyway, let your freak flag fly. Don’t try and find common ground based on a lie.”
