AG Jeff Sessions is declaring a new policy for the federal justice department. He is declaring federal authorities have the authority to enforce federal prohibition law to prohibit marijuana consumption and distribution. This sets up a constitutional showdown which only the US Supreme Court can peacefully resolve. In the 1920s, it was determined that the federal govt. did not have authority to make laws prohibiting liquor consumption or distribution. Thus, the decision was made to pass a constitutional amendment specifically and narrowly adding prohibition powers to the federal govt. But that power was ceased less than 10 years later, by a succeeding federal amendment. California, Colorado, and Washington are allowing marijuana consumption by legal adults. More than a dozen other states allow marijuana products to be consumed when appropriately prescribed by a licensed physician. NewsOK has a full report of today's developments. |
