Our Oklahoma Govt. has been out of compliance with the Oklahoma Constitution for nearly 30 years. The founding document mandates that our voters be asked if they want a convention to meet to create proposed amendments to our constitution, and then the proposals are sent to the voters for ratification. But the legislature has consistently buried any resolution of that nature for the past 10 years. the last time in which the voters were asked, was in the 1970s. Yet every legislator and constitutional scholar decries the current constitution as way too long, way too micro-managing, and includes too much legislation which became obsolete within 2 years of the founding of the state. But many of our law schools, barristers, and reasonable thinkers are fully capable of devising a constitution. especial one which simply streamlines an existing constitution without a great deal of change.
Our current constitution has about 160 amendments. yet for all that 'fixing' it's pathetically confusing and self-contradictory' leaving our discredited high court to make up laws as they go.
We need to make a contest of this issue. Remember how a benefactor stepped up to give a prize to the first pilot to fly across the Atlantic? It would be very helpful if a benefactor would come forward to sweeten the enticements. Perhaps a college scholarship to law school for whichever political science student has the winning text?
