There is a really big election this year, for US Senate. Several candidates are running for the office, but only Independents and Libertarians get to vote in the race during the June 28th primary election.

Last Spring the Oklahoma Democrat party, shrunk to the lowest ever percent of statewide voters, decided to open their elections to the largest growing segment of the electorate, the Independent voter. In percentage growth, Independent is enjoying the most rapid growth. Democrats want to curry favor with them.
This Spring, the newly re-recognized Oklahoma Libertarian Party also sought to give Independent voters access to vote in their party primary elections. That gives Independents the option to vote in either of 2 primary elections! It is totally unprecedented.

I've often defended my party involvement by saying;
"You can pick your choice from the November menu, in the general election, Or you can help create the menu by voting in the primary elections."
Libertarian Senate candidate, Dax Ewbank, pointed out;
"The challenging part for us as a party is reaching out to those independents, because there's not really a lot of infrastructure available to reach out to independent voters," Ewbank said. "Other parties have their phone lists and all that kind of stuff. It's a little more difficult to get a message out to independent voters." |
